How to reduce PMS : Yaz

Hi all

I have just finished my 3 month trial of Yaz, a birth control pill that's also approved by the FDA to treat emotional and physical premenstrual symptoms.
I'm not usually one to promote brands, but it's been so good for me that I just thought that there might be other women out there who'd like to know about it.

Short version : I love it!

Longer version : I've always had bad PMS, cramps, nausea, heavy/long periods etc. I also have low hormone levels, so have been on the pill since I was young (16) to regulate my periods. At my recent visit to my GP I asked to try a different pill - she told me about Yaz. I spotted most of the first month, then had a day or two of heavy spotting as my period. Now my periods are light (two days) with no spotting between and I can definitely notice less bloating and moodswings compared to any other pill I have tried.

It's one of the more expensive pills, but with a letter from my GP, my health insurance covers half the cost.

I'm taking Yasmin and I love it too. No more heavy bleeding, no cramping and hardly any breast tenderness. I have a 2 cm fibroid which was causing me flooding problems even on the pill but switching to Yasmin has helped that - I think I've only had a couple of short episodes (lasting 3 hours or so) since.

My periods are very light (usually no more than a regular tampon) and last 4-5 days. I love knowing almost exactly when it will start too. I'm now 50 and I'm going to keep taking it for as long as my doctor will let me!

Not Yasmin, Yaz. I was on Yasmin for a few years (aout 2 years ago) and I can definitely say Yaz is better.

Yasmin is a traditional 21-day active pill with 30 mcg hormone, 7-day sugar pill.
Yaz is a new progesterin, Drospirenone, and has a 24-day active with 20 mcg hormone 4-day sugar pill.

In my experience, I went from 5-6 day bleeding on Yasmin, 1-2 days bleeding on Yaz.

I'm on a pill that tries to keep hormones as equal as they can... I have PMDD, which, untreated, sucks major donkey balls.

I'm uninsured. What does this cost on its own? Any idea on how it works with PMDD? Do the hormonal pills stay constant?

Yes, it's a constant-dose pill. It's been designed purely to treat PMDD! I have adult acne too, and have noticed my skin is better on this pill than any other.
I'm in Australia, and it costs $70 for 3 months. Try on-line pharmacies, they're generally cheapest.
