Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to get a set of stories into a series? Some of my titles are too long to add Chapter 1, 2,3 at the end of it. There isn't enough character space.

Thanks
T

Oops. That's the only way as of now. There is a plan to make it user optional to group stories together in the order you want them to be.

I also have a couple of them that aren't together that should be and another couple that are together that shouldn't.

Do you have enough space to add Ch. 0x? Or Pt. 0x?

In the title field, use a short version of the name... ie The life and times... 01

Then in the notes field put the full title and chapter #

The Life and Times of Dobie Gillis and the Lady Killers from Uranus 01

I tried to do both of what you guys said and its been 5 days plus on some stories and it's not working. Then when I post a new story in the series it gets sent back because I need to post the chapter 1 first but when I do that it still doesnt work.

I tried to story edit like the instructions said but a bunch of my stories are stuck in pending.

When I start a new series, check out my link the G&R series, it didnt work.

The process has been frustrating. Ive read a bunch of forum posts and FAQ's on what to do. Tried to contact someone at this link but haven't heard back yet.

The problem is that the title is one character over the maximum, so Laurel must have manually modified it so the last numeral fit. This might be the reason for the series grouping process not seeing it or just tossing it out and not handling it. The maximum title length is 35 characters.

Story titles can be longer than 35 characters, but all you can put in the title field is 35 characters.

If you already have ch1 posted but not group. Put a short title, as I said above, with the word EDIT

Then in the notes put links to each story that should be grouped as a series ie
Ch 1
Lit.com/post/s/titleA

CH 2
Lit.com/post/s/titleB

Once Laurel has them set as a series, then upload additional parts in order.

Going forward all stories in a series need to have the exact same title, eith a number at the end.

That's not entirely true. The Part or Chapter number does not need to be at the end. I have some where it is in the front. i.e. JAA Ch. 01: Aftermath, there are four more where the part after the Ch. 0x: is different than the others. The closer the number is to the front the more it will ignore what comes after it in an alpha sort.

Chapters versus Parts versus Series...

I was taught that a "chapter" is the main division of a story. I always have all may chapters written before posting any of them.
I use "parts" with some submissions in order to group two or more chapters which helps reduce the number of postings I have to make to get the entire story submitted.
I use "series" to write totally different stories that have a plot or character association with another story or set of stories.

I have four stories that are part of my "Before they were stars" series, but the third one never got grouped with the others, even though the same title format was used. I brought this to the attention of Laurel and she said that she would fix it, but alas, she didn't say "when" she would fix it.

Thanks for this post. I was wondering the same as I have several series stories in mind.

I've been reading how the series gets automatically made if you use a same title + Chapter 01, etc. However, will it work if I don't put the 01, 02, etc?

I'm wondering as I was going to title my series without part or chapter numbers, as they are independent stories, but all with the same theme so to speak.

Example (I was going to title my stories something to the effect of the following):
- Window Watching: The neighbors
- Window Watching: The Co-Workers
- Window Watching: The (whatever the next in the series is)

Would that get an auto series made?

Thank you

I don't think what you've suggested will result in an alphabetic sort. The Co-Workers will come before the The Neighbors. I've done an alphabetic three story grouping; Surrender To Desire, Surrender To Love & Surrender To More. Note the D, L & M — they are in ascending order. In the example you have, the Co-Workers would likely be Pt. 01, The Neighbors would be Pt 02, etc.

I imagine you can come up with the ascending words to use, but in the end I think Pt 01, Pt 02, etc might be easier.

Oh I see. So it would work, but without the part numbers, it would then sort alphabetically as you showed. Thank you, that helps.

And you're right, that I can put Part #'s ... but I think I may be able to creatively name them to get the order I want, while keeping the same essential title. (I hope.)

I've actually not started writing that series yet, but its on a list of ideas I keep. At the moment I am editing Chapter 01 of another series I've just started, and in the middle of writing Chapter 02. And even those are on the back-burner as I am now in the midst of composing a story for the upcoming Halloween 2022 contest. I am thoroughly enjoying these writing endeavors and am learning a lot. (Learning both about this site and how the publishing works, as well as learning differing writing techniques and tips from other writers.)

Thank you again.
