Without signing up for some dating site, how does one find someone nearby to chat with and maybe even meet up with? Seems like it would be easy with everything online now to do just that. Craigs would be fun to browse through in those days. I’m not sure I’d have the nerve truly to go and meet someone but you never know. Would be fun to at least chat with someone in the same boat, ie alone in a new place.

There are dedicated threads on Lit in the personals for specific areas that might help locating someone local or in your general vicinity. As I write this, on the front page of the personals, there are threads for Texas, Canadians (granted that's pretty wide-spread), Southeast UK, Virginia, Minnesota, Florida and New England (another admittedly large area). I'm sure there are others further back. These would be places to start. The key, of course, is to be patient, which is easier said than done.

I am on my local threads but posts are scarce and almost 99.999% guys.

That's another part of the problem. When a woman does post in a thread like that, or creates a personal of her own for that matter, she's very likely to get bombarded with PMs. I chatted with a woman on here, probably over a year ago now, and she mentioned in passing about posting in one of the state threads and her inbox exploded. The thing that still stands out to me is she said one guy didn't live in her state, he was like three or four states away, but he was willing to travel! That's a bit much in my opinion. So I think a lot of the ladies get scared away from the overenthusiastic response they get from the men. From what I've heard from old-time Lit users it wasn't always that way here.

I have certainly seen a woman post and the guys start swarming in but it sometimes depends on what she wrote and how provocative it might have been. I have also seen some fun back and forth conversations in the threads but that does not happen as often.
