How to destabilize Cuba

The best way to destabilize the Cuban regime is to normalize relations completely. Then a lot of Cubans will be free to visit the U.S. They'll see how things are here. They'll visit their relatives in Miami, who will fill their ears with praises of democracy and capitalism. And then when they go home, they'll start to ask inconvenient questions, like, "Why does Cuba have to be so POOR?" ("Freedom" will not be part of the discussion, but everyone really FEELS the difference between wealth and poverty.)

It's a good question. Cuba is an island the size of Florida, richly endowed with good farmland, with an entirely literate population, and the only place in Latin America where original medical research is done. Why are they still driving cars the Americans made in the 1950s?

i think traveling from usa to cuba is still banned since the 1960s

An American can get around that by going through a third country. That is very important to the sex-tourism biz, for which all good Litsters should show a tender concern.

But it's not so easy for a Cuban who wants to visit America.

Of course, we could make removal of any such obstacles, by EITHER government, a condition of normalization.

I’m going down to Cuba to see my friends
Down where the rhythm never ends
Where by comparison my trouble will just unravel
I’m North American, you know
Don’t like to hear where I can’t go
Free people will insist on the freedom to travel

I’m gonna drink the running mojito
And walk out on the malecón
In one hand a monte cristo
And in the other an ice cream cone

I’m going down to cuba with my band
We’re going to formulate a plan
Whereby we obtain that cultural delusion

If I told you once I told you thrice
It’ll put a smile on your face to see a Chevrolet with a soviet transmission...

There's an old saying, something like, "When your enemy is committing suicide, don't help him."

As Trump has said, we need do nothing to Cuba - they're imploding on their own.

Just buy more popcorn.

He's not acting like he's going to just wait for the regime to die. That's why we're all paying (some little) attention to this. We could have troops in Havana this year.

Exactly. And when they do reach out for help they will only be able to get it from us.

Go back in these political threads. Your predictions and wishes are all way off the mark.

I predicted for a long time this Admin was going to do something really STUPID to Venezuela, and now they have.
This should have been done to Chavez. We just didn't know how. Cheney and Rumsfeld were all about invasion and occupation. That was stupid.
Even more stupid was the liberal regimes that squandered what was gained by their folly.

This has so far been the smartest way to effect positive change in Venezuela. Rather than throwing out the entire personnel infrastructure in the country, like we did to disastrous results in Afghanistan and Iraq, Trump is allowing the existing infrastructure to operate for the needs of the country - but with an extremely watchful eye, with severe consequences for non-compliance waiting at every turn.

You are a lost cause. Before Chavez Venezuela was the 7th largest economy in the world. Socialist authoritarians do not work.
Unsustainable.
No reason not to support his government -- we have always had good relations with poor countries. And with dictatorships, too.

We did not have good relations with Venezuela. Nor Columbia or Cuba for that matter.
These countries driving personal wealth by poisoning ours is a thing of the past.

‘We are in charge’: Venezuela interim leader Delcy Rodriguez rejects Trump’s control claim; 7 days mourning declared
Venezuela’s interim leader Delcy Rodriguez on Tuesday firmly rejected claims by the United States that it is now in control of the country, and also announced a week of national mourning for those killed during the US military operation that led to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro.
Speaking on state television, Rodriguez said Venezuela remained sovereign and was being governed by its own people. She pushed back against statements by US President Donald Trump, who has said Washington is now “in charge” and that Venezuela will hand over millions of barrels of oil to the United States.
