How to decide where to split story into installments

I'm working on a story that is currently 42,000 words and I think it will get to about 50,000 by the time it's done. That's probably 13-15 pages on literotica site.

Most stories I see even ones split into parts are only 2-4 pages, but I've also read that there is no imposed limit.

Personally when I'm looking at new stories to read I feel intimated by "seducing the busboy Part 17". I'm like, holey moley I'm not committing to 17 chapters, even if it has HOT rating! On the other hand if I want a quick read and I click on something that is NOT part of a series, only to find after 10 mins that it's actually 15 pages long, I might be disappointed about that too.

Aside from how many pages is appropriate for a single submission, what other strategies are best for reader's enjoyment?

Do readers like to, oh I dunno, accompany their reading with some other stimulation and try to time that to finish at about the time they can see that the story will end (maybe this is just me)? Meaning the author would be kind to finish their chapter on the completion of a sexy scene? That would be hard for my particular story as there is a long build up and no 'half time show' to look forward to.

Or is it more important to keep the multiple parts roughly the same length?

Or, is the whole point of splitting into installments so that you can get your story out there and get feedback even though you might only be 20% into your grand plan? That's not really me in this case, my story is structured as a singular read and I would post all the parts at once so that people don't need to wait. Does that mean I should just make it one big submission? Even though that might be 15 pages?

Another consideration is tags. For a multi-part story there might be different themes from one chapter to the next, and the author can tag each installment according to it's specific content. For me, the tags would be much the same no matter how I split it (the back end will have more actual sex tags, but the whole thing has certain fetish tags).

Where I'm at is, I think it would be rude to post 15 pages as a single submission, so I want to split it 'half way through', at an interesting point with a bit of a cliffhanger. Maybe 7 pages for part I and 8 pages for part II. But, is that still just way too long for a single installment?

I sort of groan to myself when I see any story longer than 3 pages and usually click back.

That depends...

Some of mine I have published the entire thing. Others I broke up.

The ones I broke up, I made sure that they were longer than one Lit page and shorter than four... or around 7,000 words long if I could break them there otherwise I my have had to go longer to get to the next break point.

Thanks for those replies, and I'm kind of the same about 3+ pages as a reader.

After further thought I can split it into 4 parts, with all but the first part ending in something sexy. This makes the page count 3, 4+, 3/4, 3/4. Does that sound like the way to go?

At the end of the day, I chose to write a story that is a little long winded to be well suited to literotica. Well the fact is that is just my developing style - the more practice I get, the more long winded I seem to be getting... this story isn't even that complicated; the whole thing takes place in one setting.

It somewhat depends on the category too. Romance can be longer and that is rewarded if done well. I've written several up to about 8 Lit Screen Pages in length and they were well received.

If you want to break it up I would certainly recommend that you; 1. Complete all parts. 2. Submit all parts on the same day one after the other — the site editor will publish them every couple of days. This is good as it keeps you and the story on the New Story page for quite awhile. 3. Put a note in the Introduction that informs readers that all parts are completed and submitted for publication (lets them know it's not another dead-end multi-chapter story). Probably a good idea to clearly indicate The End — so they know it's really finished. 4. It's important that the Titles of all parts is exactly the same; Title - Part One, Title - Part Two, etc. (or Chapter instead or Part).

Best wishes for a big hit !

publish over xmas?

Well it's been a while, always amazes me how long it takes to finish anything. Finally ready to publish the story mentioned above, and going to take yukonnights' advice of requesting them spread a couple days a part. It made 5 parts in the end.

I'm just thinking, is over christmas a good time? A lot of readers might be too busy to get near a screen until new year? While others might actually have more time for reading than usual? Hoping some experienced users might have observed trends for this time of year.

The Lit "slow time" seems to be the end of summer, not the middle of winter. These year's abnormal anyway, what with lockdowns etc... so publish, and start on the next story, would be my advice
