How to create illustrations

I see a number of stories that seem to have computer generated illustrations. I can't seem to find any how-to guides for doing this. Is this something a non-artist can do with software?

Not really - as far as I am aware no such program or software currently exists that would enable a complete non-artist to produce competent illustrations easily.
There is a learning curve involved in order to use the programmes that produce the illustrations that I think you are referring to.
In a lot of cases, artists using these programmes may also utilise photoshop in post production in order to get the effect they are looking for, so not really something for the non-artist.

As far as I know, Poser used to be pretty popular. But i can't really vouch for how easy it is to use for complete beginners these days. Also, I'd say that it still requires some artistry to get it to look good. 3D has a tendency to have a bit of an uncanny valley look to it, especially in erotica.
