I just finished reading Nick Hornby's novel How To Be Good and was puzzled by the last line of the book (don't worry, i'm not giving anything away here):

"...but just at the wrong moment I catch a glimpse of the night sky behind David, and I can see that there's nothing out there at all."

I was wondering.....
A) if any of you beautiful, intelligent people have read this book, and
B) how did you interpret this last line? It seems significant, but i'm not sure what he's trying to say. Why is it the "wrong moment?" Isn't it supposed to be raining? What the hell? It seems out of sync with the rest of the book.

If you haven't read it, i recommend it, and all of Hornby's books....then you can come back and answer my question!

Yes, I read it, but it was a while ago.

My interpretation of that line was more or less that we each have to define our own moral compass; that there aren't any easy 'right' or 'wrong' rules per se. Which can be a very scary thing - it means you have to hold yourself responsible for all of the consequences of your own actions.
