How Radioactive Are You Willing To Be?

I'm piecing a story together, THE BLACK MARKET, that's a community's effort to crush a club where white wives and black men connect for sex, drugs, and general debauchery.

On the drawing board is something I call THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS modeled on Roosevelts nemesis, Huey P. Long. My Huey is black.

How far are you willing to push readers?

I don't know. I guess as far as the story I'm trying to tell needs me to. I really haven't felt compelled to do much pushing yet. I wonder if that's something that happens when you've written enough "safe" stories, and want to do something different. I hardly have enough stories under my belt to be there yet.

Huey Long (The Kingfish) is best known for his Share Our Wealth program, created in 1934, under the motto "Every Man a King."

Anywhere from x-ray tech up to Incredible Hulk, depending on the pay.

So, like a pornographic "All the King's Men"? Sounds cool. I doubt you'll get a Pulitzer, however.

I push where I, as a reader, want to go. At least now that I've changed the name I write and post under, readers will have a better idea of what to expect.

I aspire to ENTERTAINING HACK.

I've pushed hard, real hard. Even went so far as to write about a particular commenter and include his comment in the story. That got a rise. But every author that read it loved it. It's called "Oh Crap!"

I push as far as the story needs to go. I don't try and shock for the sake of it, but if something shocking needs to be in there I'm definitely not going to hold back!

Is an exploding nuclear plant radioactive enough? Not to mention killing off the whole cast of characters.

As long as those characters are cute and innocent, and their obliteration is described in painful ɥsec-by-ɥsec detail, then the story is radioactive enough. If the victims are scum, well hell, fuck'em.

I got my ass chewed by quite a few people for it. I liked the characters myself but they had to go to create the atmosphere for the rest of the story.
