How organic foods can turn you into a self-righteous jerk

Organic consumers are jerks

Ever walk into a Whole Foods market and feel like you’re surrounded by smug, self-righteous jerks?

It’s not just you. A new study confirms that these people really ARE jerks — and you should probably leave the store before you turn into one of them.

Researchers split 60 people into three groups and then showed them pictures of different types of food. One group was shown images of labeled organic foods like apples and spinach, another saw non-organic “comfort” foods like brownies and cookies while a third — the control group — saw non-organic, non-comfort foods like rice and mustard.

Then, they were asked how much time — up to 30 minutes — they’d be willing to commit to some volunteer work.

The comfort group offered up an average of 24 minutes and the control group volunteered 19. The folks in the organic group, on the other hand, were positively stingy — they volunteered just 13 minutes.

So much for cooperative living!

The organic folks were also more likely to climb as high as they could on the moral high horse. When asked to rank hypothetical moral violations — like cousins having sex, or a lawyer on the prowl for clients in a hospital — on a scale of 1 to 7, the organics folks were far more likely to be more severe in their judgments.

Hmmm. Harsh judgments on ambulance-chasing lawyers? Can’t really say I blame them for that one.

OK, this is funny. And yes, plenty of these people really are smug Prius-driving holier-than-thou liberals. You know them. They wave organic bananas around like some kind of status symbol.

But let’s face it — while plenty of organic foods are a complete ripoff (especially organic packaged foods), others are the only way to avoid produce soaked in chemicals and factory-farmed meats awash in hormones.

So don’t be afraid to buy organic when it makes sense. Just don’t be a jerk about it.

I'm still waiting for the liberals to start banning inorganic foods... you know, all those insidious silicon based food groups taking over NYC... we seriously need more food police, I'm so scared! Wait, isn't organic food CARBON based... Oh shit, I'm gonna leave a Carbon shitprint if I eat that... I think I may just have to wait for the Cliff Notes to the Progressive talking points, I don't know what I'm supposed to think!

I'm a conservative who eats organic and pesticide free as much as the budget allows. It's healthier and tastes better. If you can't afford it, I feel bad for you and hope your situation improves. If you choose not to, that's your choice and I'm not your mother.

I also bring my own bags. I got them because a really cheap grocery store has you bag your own. I bought them so I'm getting all the use I can from them, and I don't have stupid flimsy bags cluttering the house.

I recycle. Recycling helps keep a lot of prices lower because it is cheaper to recycle my can than mine metal for a new one. It also means not having as many ugly and smelly garbage dumps. I do think everyone should recycle, but the police have better things to do than look in your garbage for newspaper and glass you tossed in the wrong bin. I think that if people saw how much money recycling saves in customer costs vs how much more could be saved, people would recycle more.

I believe in green energy. I want solar panels on my roof. I want a wind turbine. I think the Sierra club should be told to go pound sand and those millions of square acres in the USA should have solar panels and wind turbines. We should also have tidal generators and geothermal plants. Every river should have several dams with run offs to regulate water for irrigation and plumbing. With as much as we could very easily do to cheaply generate electricity, there shouldn't be a single gasoline car in the USA so we could tell the Arabs to go fuck themselves.

We should have several desalination plants every couple hundred miles of coastline. If we can pump oil all the way through a pipe from Alaska through Canada to the continental USA, we should be able to desalinate ocean water and never suffer drought. Got a flood? Turn the water pipeline spigots the other direction so they take away excess water. If the ancient Incas did it, why aren't we?

I believe corporations should get redonk ulous tax breaks for going green. They exist to make profit. If you want them to recycle trash instead of dumping it, make recycling more profitable. Their conscience isn't ruled by morality, but by numbers. That's how you make corporate America green. Give them better tax breaks if their green programs create jobs. A spark plug installer for GM could really use a job pulling paper out of trash cans and shredding it for a recycling contractor.

All current landfills, especially older ones, should be mined for recyclable material. Yeah it's a crappy job that would pay crap, but there are plenty more spark plug installers that need jobs.

You can tell it's really late; I'm on a soapbox. So, long rant short: eat organic if you can but its your decision, and the govt should tell Sierra Club to fuck off so businesses can create green jobs and lower prices of the crap I buy

Organic is wasteful and if we all "did the right thing" we would starve and the land would suffer...

Now, let's do Atheists, Liberal Christians, and Evangelicals.
