For long hair? I'm 41 and my hair is down the length of my back. It's thick and really nice but I'm thinking maybe it's time for a cut? I love it but I just don't know if I should keep it anymore.

I've heard this recently as well - something about how women over 40 shouldn't have long hair. Why not? Your hair should be as you like it to be. Your age has nothing to do with it.

I've been worrying about the same thing, because I like to dye my hair unusual colours, but at 33 I worry it will look silly. But who cares?

Your hair sounds beautiful, if you love it, you should keep it.

i agree w/ kassandra: do whatever makes you happy w/ your hair, i say. :>

Get feedback from those who know you, your style, and those who will be honest with you about the pros-and-cons of altering the length in such a significant manner.

Of course, shorter hair can be (generalizing) easily managed so that's one obvious advantage of the abrupt change in style.

And maybe you just wanna look & feel different. Maybe it's marking a change in your life, circumstances or situation.

Nevertheless, consult with those who can provide the honest, loving and genuine feedback that is useful when making decisions, big-and-small.

Keep it fairly short

The longest it should be would be to the middle of your back. But having short hair for a girl I think is sexy.

Do what you want!! Who cares about society... Just, get a good cut, ask your hair guy what looks good for you personally (not for your age).

I'm 39 and have my hair grown down to the middle of my back. I keep it lightly layered. There are oft times I think of seriously cutting it, but I really love the way it looks and feels. And I get a lot of positive feedback on it.

Not to mention, most of the men I know adore long hair on women.

But all in all I would do what YOU like. What makes you shine and feel good about you. If you have doubts and wish to know.. go to a stylist and have them take a photo of you and do a computer consultation and you can see hundreds of styles on your face shape. And then if you see one you like and still wish to change, well there ya go! At least after a computer consultation you will know what it looks it. They can show you hundreds of different styles this way as well as play with the color on screen for you so you can see what that looks like, too!

Best of luck!

Hair length should not be set in stone by others who believe that it should suddenly be short due to age. If you want to cut it and have it short for a while, you might enjoy that for summer. If you are like me, and truly love having long hair, you will just grow it back and appreciate it that much more. That is the great thing about hair, it grows back! I believe that most men love long hair. They give me that impression anyway. *wink* I have strangers come up to me and tell me they love my hair and to please never cut it.

Hair length doesnt make a woman sexier. Although it does make it easier for us men to have something to pull her backwards to us while having sex. Seriously, Im not pulling your leg it doesnt matter and its your choice although I do like pulling hair or legs when I get the choice.

If you decide to cut it, could you please loan me some to plug back on top of my "shiny" hair areas of my head. I will be happy to loan you my other head and let you plug it in you. Thats fair isnt it? You get rid of some sexy hair, I get to look sexier and a chance to plug in my "Oh God that was wonderful" smile. :)

I don't think that there HAS to be a correlation between age and hairstyle. After all, if your hair looked good the day before you turned 40, then it shouldn't look any different on your 40th birthday, should it?

I'm 31, and my hair is shoulder-length right now. In the past 10 years my hair has been short, long, and everywhere in between. Right now I'm growing it out again, though I'm not sure if I should. I think that I look sexy with long hair, but with four small kids to care for, I tend to just scrape it back into a ponytail to get it out of the way.

Regardless of their age, some people look better with long hair; some people look better with short hair; some people look best somewhere in between. I have an acquaintance who's 46, and her hair's waist-length and very wavy. I've heard her say that ever since college, she's kept her hair the same length. Now, however, it's completely white and thinning, so it doesn't suit her at all (I've know her for 15 years, and I'm not sure her style ever did suit her). She looks much older than she is; in fact, my husband was shocked when he discovered that she's about his age.

On the other hand, a former professor of mine, who's now in her late 60's, has beautiful long blonde hair. It's thick and very, very healthy, and it makes her look much younger. She's always doing different things with it.

I think that it should be your decision. If you're happy with the way you look, then don't let some arbitrary "fashion rule" dictate your personal style. If you decide you're ready for a change, though, maybe you could start with something simple and see how it goes.

It`s your hair, if you like how it looks, screw everybody else.

I`m 42 and my hair reaches my waist, I tend to wear it in a plait in summer or if I am working as it gets in the way and can become a safety issue.
Some people don`t like it, some panic if they think I have had it cut off.
My SO loves it, but ultimately it is my choice.

Btw I am male.

I've always found it strange that a lot of women seem to think they have to cut their hair when they reach a particular age (sometimes 40, sometimes 50). As someone said a few posts back, does one day change the way your hair looks on you? I knew a woman well into her 70s who still had waist-length hair, though she usually wore it up in a bun. Not only long, but still a deep lustrous black, with only the occasional white hair in there. I found that really annoying since my hair's been almost white since I was 30!

I didn't start growing my hair out until I turned 40!?! I tend to do things backwards I guess......

I love long hair on a woman, and it doesn't matter her age. A very traditional and unoriginal attitude I know, but you like what you like.

Annastasia, I would keep the long hair. When you get a change like cutting long hair it can really change your looks, besides long hair is sexy.

You have to take care of it. So if you want to cut it, cut it. But if not, then keep it. I personally, think long hair is sexy, but so is the will to do what you want.

Old is what you think is old. My old is not your old. I say if you want to cut it, don't cut it too much, get layers and cut like 3-4 inches off. Maybe 2-3 inches below your shoulders? That's a nice length. I tend to cut my hair when it becomes a burden, but since i've been managing it just fine lately, it's nice & long. :)
