How do you go about deciding what an appropiate tip is, if any, at a resturant...

What about tipping delivery people...

~i~

Unless they are complete morons i always leave at least 10%. 15 if they do a normal good job. I will leave a little more if they do great and I think they are funny or cool in some way. Me and my roomate did leave a nearly 50 percent tip once since our waitress was just so damn fine. She flirted some gave great service and was funny too.

I will leave at least 10% almost always. If it is very bad I will either leave none or just some loose change. My roomate and his brother left a 21 cent tip once because the waiter did not believe that he was 21. He was 24 then and has always looked old for his age and our state ID's are very hard to fake because of the way they put the hologram on.

if the service REALLY sucks, then complain to the manager, if they do nothing about it, then tell them you'll talk to someone higher, and then they usually do something about it. BUT ONLY if they don't do anything about it.

Most of the time if the service is good at least 15%, though I think 10% is standard. If service is better than good, then at least 20%. IF service is more than adequate BUT they bug me more than I'd like, then tip goes back down a bit each time.

It depends...

on more than service; if it is a buffet restaruant where there is no service then I don't tip at all. If it is a nice restaurant and I get good service I may tip 20% or more. I usually do at least a couple of dollars even if the meal was just a quick $7 lunch. I like to round off the bill; if I have a ten dollar bill and the meal was $7 then I just leave the ten.

If there was any service at all then at least 10% - but usually more. My father breaks out the calculator and calculates the minimum tip down to the last penny - and believe me, he can afford to tip a lot better than I can - but I guess that is because he was raised during the depression.

RESTAURANTS: 15% or better

DELIVERY: Often tell them to keep the change and give them $2 extra.

for us....

...usually it's 15% of the bill but if they go the extra mile or actually try to talk and get friendly with us (mainly our kids) we give more..

We very rarely have food delivered. We'd rather pick it up, but when we do we give 15% on top of delivery charge...

My mom is a horrible tipper and we refuse to go out with her b/c of it.. When we do have the occasion of going out and my mom and dad are paying, we offer to pay the gratuity.

Reminds me of a song by one of my favorite bands, Live:

Waitress

come on baby leave some change behind
she was a bitch, but i don't care
she brought our food out on time
and wore a funky barrette in her hair

come on baby leave some change behind
she was a bitch but good enough
to leave some change, everybody's good
enough for some change

the girl's got family
she needs cash to buy aspirin for
her pain, everybody's good enough
for some change

we all get the flu, we all get aids
we've got to stick together
after all, everybody's good enough
for some change, SOME FUCKING CHANGE!!!

10% if the service is average

15% - 20% if it's outstanding (depends on the size of the check)

I try to account for the difference between "I'm having a bad day" and "I really don't give a fuck - here's your food"

If you fall into the latter category, $.01

I had a job application for a Perkin's restaurant and on the application it said that the company took all the tips and paid the waitstaff an approximation of what THEY thought the appropriate tip was. Ever since then I've been wary about tipping a little extra for good service, at least at Perkin's anyway.

I usually go 15% on average, but adjust for good/bad service.

20% normally.......................If everything is ok...

I never used a percentage. Just now, I looked at what amount we usually pay for a bill would break down to, and I found we usually end up leaving around 20-25% for good service. But, since both myself, and my husband have been servers in reasturants, we know how cheap alot of people can be when tipping. In this area, which is a town infested with poor college students, and cheap ass old biddies, a standard tip would be $2 for every $40 bill left. My husband and I try to leave like 7 or 8 at the least.

you forgot one thing though Bob, the penny has to be upside down. Heads up means luck, heads down, tells you YOU SUCK!

leaving nothing at all, maybe makes them think you simply forogt, so is better if the service sucks to leave the upside down penny.

tip

i eat at home most of the time.when i do it depends on the service and how good the food is.5.00 or so.

Always tip 20%! If they have a bad attitude, I chuck it up to them having a bad day.

Double the tax, usually. But I take into account how many people sat at the table, because 4 people take up a full table, even if two only had a salad.

I always give at least 15% but I usually round up. When I was younger my mom supported my sisters and I on tips... and I remember how hard she worked for her money.

Do ya still tip 15%...

NO!!!

If the service sucked it gets what it deserves..
If it was good it get at least 20%

Don't Ya Think That...

The standard 15% - 20% tip is taken for granted in resturants by waiters and waitresses...I mean if they only come around once to fill your glass of tea do they really deserve $3.00 for that service...

As for delivery services...Most places say the delivery is FREE and that means you're already paying for the delivery in the price of the food you ordered and the hourly wage of who's delivering the food so why add on another 15% to the bill...

I usually give delivery people like 2 or 3. Not much, but they arn't serving me, taking my order, getting my drinks, and using thier legs. They are driving a car, and in this town, they make 8 an hour before tips. No way I am gonna tip em like I do a server in a reasturant who only makes 3 an hour, and runs thier legs off.

15% standard, more if the service is above average. Now, if I have a coffee and it's like $2, I don't leave .30, I'll leave $1.

Delivery is usually $2.

Buffet, they may not serve but they do bring you coffee, etc., so 10%.

I've been a waitress while going to school and I think you should be tipped according to service, not because you're only making $3 per hour.

Like a lot of the other respondents who have, or do, I work as a waiter. Making $2.86/hour, including the two that I go in before we open to set up and all, makes me appreciate every tip I get, though I will admit, the guy who left me $5 on $60 this past Sunday left me fuming. And before you ask, they got the refills without asking, their food nice and hot, and their check when they asked for it. I normally tip 20% and round up or down on service. When I'm at a bar and I order a drink, I still leave a buck and the change because around here it only costs about $2.25 for a beer, $2.75 for a drink. If the service is good I tend to tip towards 25%, if its not so good, I'm around 15%, but if I notice that the place is swamped and that they are being run all over, I normally just let it slide.
