This isn't a question about a story but a question about feedback.

So I've gotten my first three stories up. They seem to have been well received, but I have nothing to base myself on to compare. The score is obvious, but what about views and number of votes?

Keeping in mind it's not very reliable, how many views and vote does one of your new story has to get before you start considering it's been seen and is successful?

Thanks!

It depends too much upon category. A story in Sci-Fi/Fantasy can be a success with only a few thousand views and 20 some odd votes. Apply those same numbers to an incest story, and you're talking about an abyssmal failure *laugh*

You can get a bit of a gauge by looking at the toplists to see how many votes high-ranking stories pick up in your category on average. Just keep in mind that the new voting element seems to be attracting more vote clicks, so that yardstick may be skewed for a while.

Views are harder to pin down, because the views toplist is overloaded with incest. Even finding a story in another category is difficult, and some cats will never, ever find a place in that list, even if they're masterpieces touted far and wide.

You almost have to judge views from your own list, and that takes a while. You need quite a few stories before you can begin to build up an average and determine how well different stories/chapters are doing compared to previous work.

So far my stories all pretty much have a similar number of views. The first chapter has 5k more views than the other two, but that seem to be expected for a first chapter. The other two are pretty much equal. For the votes, there's about 30 less votes for each incremental chapter.

The most views list doesn't seem to be much help, considering even the stories on the last page were posted in 2000 or so. Is there a way to see stories by number of votes?

If one person reads one of my stories and likes it, then I've been successful.

That's nice in theory and has a poetic beauty to it, but I'd like to think my stories pleased a bigger audience...

I wish I knew how to answer your question, but I can only give you my own experience.

If I get feeback that is positive, then I think it has been successful. The views and the score are pretty good indicators too. If people like it enough to tell you about it, or to vote on it, then it is a success.

And the little red "H" on the side proves it. :D
