How many words on a Lit Page?

Depends on the formatting, Ms Witch. The rule of thumb I use is around 3500 words.

Oh, good luck for a week now!!

Actually, I don't think it's the words, I think it's the number of lines....so it could be anywhere from 3000 to well over 4000 words, depending on how many lines were in your story.

The actual number I came up with for the average of a one hundred page sample was 3,767 -- which is an even odder number.

3,500 is the easiest number to actually use without a calculator and is "close enough" because I found a spread of nearly a thousand words from the shortest to the longest (not counting stories/pages shorter than a full page.)

Can't be lines because the stories dynamically word-wrap depending on browser resolution.

It's actually a character count, modified by the nearest paragraph break -- roughly 14KB characters to produce a 24-25KB page size with the HTML overhead and code for the randomized banner ads.

I have found that 7500 words will almost always mean 2 full pages bleeding into a 3rd, so your 3,767 estimate is pretty much on the money.

3,767 is NOT an estimate, it is the actual average of one hundred full Lit pages C&P into MS Word 97 for the word count function. The sample was taken about seven years ago when the site was converting to script based formatting, so it might be outdated, but it is actual experimental data.

I got it. I did the same thing earlier this year when we were debating some rule changes for the Survivor contest, and the number I reached (with only 30-40 pages, though) was very close to that one. Wish I had kept the spreadsheet.

Only if you're a serious NEOM offender.

C&P into word doesn't account for HTML tags, special character codes and any other "invisible" text in the file.

The adjustment to the nearest paragraph break has more effect than long words do -- even the worst NEOM offenders have trouble maintaining an average word length of more than 7 to 10 characters.
