How many editors review our work?

When I began submitting my first series, I found it interesting that I would have as many as 20 hits before the work would post. With my second series, I was stunned to see that the number was 30 and above. I submitted a work yesterday for consideration and it now looks like I've got over 60 hits without it being posted. Are there that many editors on lit or is this a danger sign that the work might be rejected?

That many hits might mean something, but I think it is some new kind of phenomena. My most recently pile of smut received fifty hits before being posted, which took about 60 hours. Until then it was usually only about three hits before a story was either accepted or rejected.

Stories are not edited by Management. That is, no changes are made in them. They are either rejected, with the reason given in the Jeopardy way or they are accepted as is, with typos, etc.

"Hits" or Views don't necessarily have anything to do with how many people are actually reading your submission. Given the way Literotica's servers occasionally hang up or time out with only a half page sent, the number of hits could just be an indication that the page had to be refreshed several times.

There are a lot of factors that could result in multiple requests for the server to send or resend a page and very few of them have anything to do with the number of editors or whether your story will be rejected.

The views before approval has surged in recent days. I suspect something outside of Lit, actually, such as an automated story horking bot.

If your story includes some decent homo worship youre rewarded with extra views.

What is a horking bot? Do you mean to say stories can be pirated before they even get posted?

I noticed the same thing when my latest story was submitted. It had over 50 views before it was approved.

Weird. I kind of thought the same as you - that I'd had unknowingly written something especially naughty and it might get rejected.

All went well, though, so who knows?

It just might be a configuration item that was reset for the bots checking the stories. It might just be a mistake or it could have been done on purpose.

All the bot will get until the story is approved is a message that the submission is waiting for approval ( same as when a story is rejected ) It can just keep checking until it gets text other than that, and then copy.

You know this is bad timing for me to be reading this. I usually go by gut feelings and just the other day told my wife that I am getting more and more leery of putting my stuff up on lit. (well my series which I'm close to publishing with some new material, one shot shit I don't care about). The e-book market is booming and people are putting up 3,000 word stories and selling them for .99 with a free stock photo cover. If someone were savvy enough they could lift all these stories slap covers on them and bulk download themselves to Smashwords which leads me to my next point.
For anyone who has used smashwords the story que would usually be a couple of hundred and your e-book could get up there in as little as a couple of hours. My editor submitted two last week and that's what happened. This week he was shocked to see 1500 stories in the que ahead of him. He contacted the site and they told him they have recently allowed publishers who package other peoples stuff to start bulk uploading. This is perfectly timed with the post up there. This could be some kind of Mass Pirating I think the only dilemma would be coming up with "authors" as SW requires copy right notes and an author has to have a website but there are ways around every thing. This could also be a coincidence. I last submitted two weeks ago and I didn't even see the 2 views I sometimes do. On Thursday the story had Fridays date as pending and that was it. I have never seen more than 4 views on a story unless it got kicked back at which point I think it was 8 views. I think this may be a concern big enough to PM Laurel about and wonder if anyone has. I was planning on my next submission being next week. When I put it up and this 50/60 view thing is going on and there has been no explanation from the site it will be the last one I post. In fact I may take some garbage story I wrote last year and post it just to "test" what's going on.

Okay for the record I just sent Laurel a PM with the link to this thread and that this could be nothing but a glitch on their end or it could be as Dark said a new way to "hork" stories in bulk. In either case I feel she should put up some type of announcement about it as this could really deter people from wanting to post. Anything on the net is fair game my stories and anyone else's could be anywhere with a changed name and it would be hard to tell, but possibility compared to definitely makes it different for me. Hopefully she will respond in a forum about this.

Do keep in mind that bots are more likely to be simply tools to fill up crappy story sites that are fronts for pay-porn sites, malware distributers, or to fill the spaces between giant animated ads.

When you come across those sort of sites, they only have the first page of the story copied ( often with piss-poor formatting ) and maintain every bit of the text -- including copyright notices and links back to Lit.

Bots aren't well adapted to stealing things to publish for profit, they're better suited to mass copying and reposting without the lazy scumbag who runs the site having to do anything other than start the script running.

Thanks to all who responded. It is even more odd that the numbers go up in even numbers, i. e. from 60-64-66 etc. I haven't seen an odd number rise yet. So this may confirm the idea of a pirate bot, or it just may be a genuine coincidence. Don't know, and I'm too new here to know.

It seems that lit is missing a golden opportunity here. There is a way to keep the site generally free, but also allow some profit as well. I don't know if management would be willing to consider the idea though.

The numbers have always gone in 2's but usually 2,4 most i saw was 8 and it was a story that was booted so the even thing has always been which is the only thing that makes me think it's possibly a glitch. as Lit has never had odd numbers. For the record if you have any ideas on ways Lit could make some money certainly PM Laurel with the idea couldn't hurt.

Let me test the water here before bothering Laurel

The idea is this:

Lit has amassed a library of work over the past several years. Use the dvd/cd formula where work that is over five years old would be free for any to view. Anything more recent would require a subscription or pay per view element, much like the .99 cents mentioned elsewhere. The only exception would be new novels and novellas. The first chapter of these works would be offered for free as a sneak peak and the rest of the series would then go on the premium level.

Of course, this would also mean that the premium works would be worth reading. If the site is charging .99 then all of the works would need to be edited for grammar and spelling. An even split seems reasonable, .33 to the site; .33 to the editor; and .33 to the author. Also, it would require a retooling of the rating system, but those are bugs that can be worked out later.

I know that lit is proud of the free speech, and free access; but this idea would help motivate writers, editors, and illustrators to a higher level; and allow them to profit from their work.

Just an idea, don't kill me.

Good idea except you are grossly under estimating how fucking cheap the average person is these days. Most of the people who read on lit read because it is free. .99 does not sound like much but think about this; I know people who read 30-40 stories a week on this site and follow a couple of dozen authors reading everything they come out with. .99 isn't a lot but $25-$30 a week is. If you are going to spend on porn may as well go to Smashwords or Amazon and by an entire book for $1.99.
Lit has been free for too long to start charging. Also if they charged they may start to discriminate the type of work going up here. I mean there are stories here that are pretty poor but the person who wrote them worked hard on them and takes pride in them and it's a thrill for it to see print. If people have to pay Lit may start deciding if your work is "good enough" to go up here.

The other option was the subscription

They'd have to take their collection back to zero, as that is not the deal made with authors who post here. What do you think the likelihood of that is in a collection this size?

I'm not bother by the steal and repost to another site issue. I don't post a story here in the first place that hasn't already had a fairly long run for profit.

I understand what you're saying, but that's why I also included the subscription idea. I don't know how much Penthouse or other magazines cost right now, but let's imagine a $5.00/month or fifty a year idea for unlimited access. As to the increase in standards, yes and no. The premium stories would be the ones that needed to be paid for. Anything with a 3.5 rating or lower would be free regardless of when it was published. As for compensation, I'd be happy just to have a penny for everytime one of my stories was viewed. I've only been writing since October, but with seven stories I have over 200,000 views, so if I do the math right, that's 2,000.00. Not alot, but hey, it's spending money and a neat vacation fund. Also, at that rate, folks could read to their hearts content and actually spend less than they would with smashwords.

Surely, didn't your story Plagiarism Ch 3 post yesterday? I remember reading it and enjoying it

I don't think so. Surely posted Chapter 3 of a series, and I read it and commented. I like the series, it's inventive, and Surely is writing it well.

Ohhh so the title is actually Plagiarism chapter 3! My bad it really looked like you were alluding to something. I'm on the east coast where everything is a sarcastic remark or innuendo thought you were hinting that Surely was ripping someone off especially seeing at points during this thread we were discussing stories being lifted. My apologies

I Really Should Have Remembered

Lovecraft, old chap, that everyone here has a dirty mind. No of course I didn't accuse Surely of plagiarism. Nothing was farther from my mind. Her (I guessed Surely is she, but if he isn't I apologize) story is about a woman whose work is plagiarized, and how she takes revenge upon the plagiarist and her entire family. It's well worth reading, good stroke material and a good concept, quite nicely told.
