How long in Pending?

I have decided to start sharing some of my stories in Lit. In particular one series of stories in BDSM category. The initial submission was rejected but I have since redrafted the initial introduction and changed significantly. I also have submitted part 2 and part 3 is in progress.

However the resubmission has been in pending for over a week now. As I understand it and appreciate there is only in reality one approver which I imagine is a big workload.

But it’s frustrating too as I don’t know if I should continue to write these episodic parts if the first two never get approved.

What should be the usual reasonable period to expect for a submission to be either approved or rejected?

Brutal One

EDIT - I have a nasty suspicion it may be rejected again. Reason being character name. As written based on the real character for inspiration but background and professsion nothing like her.

EDIT - simple fix. Changed character name. I guess I just reset the clock :(

As a new writer who has been bounced once already, you should expect 5 - 8 days, typically. Your content will be scrutinised more closely because of the first rejection.

How long in Pending?

Until it isn't.

What was the reason for rejection? Simple spelling or grammar issues, or some kind of rules violation? The answer could make a difference.

Not grammar or spelling. Still difficult to determine the reason but in promoting the revision I believe it made the initial opening better and the change to first person rather than third. Also relaying the story from the 2 main central characters (others mentioned as an important reference to later chapters.

It’s a BDSM series so it will have all elements of this discipline. I am keen too to represent the thoughts and feelings of all main characters equally. I think LIT does not like very one sided encounters where potentially the first draft in third person came across much more like this. It totally changes in the rewrite so we will see.

The 'screening' process here is quick and shoddy, which considering this is one person going through dozens of stories a night is what I'd expect.

But she will look at a new author a little more closely and if you're writing NC-and by that I mean NC in BDSM not just the NC category-she may look even closer.

being booted once, your new submission will end up further back in the pile than new submissions, so it make take a while.

My advice is to not try and submit chapter 2 until this is clear. Because 2 could end up flying right through and 1 still in limbo

as for the reason? They usually send it in form of a question "did your story contain..."

Thanks, makes sense that a resub may take longer and yes it does in principal have NC in BDSM but of course it’s not quite as simple as that. I just hope that LIT can appreciate more complex writing. That’s not the arrogant statement that it may first appear. But chapter 2 also submitted where hopefully it’s starting to become clearer. Without chapter 1 though the whole story arc and idea doesn’t work.

I just had that happen to me: first chapter rejected of a three part story. If I was you, I'd put your chapter two back into draft status until your first chapter is approved.

And you didn't say, and of course you don't have to, but if you let us know which of the rejection notices you got, we might be able help you fix the problem.

Dear Writer,
Thank you for your submission to Literotica. We appreciate the time and effort you've taken to write a story and submit it to our site . However, we've found that we cannot post your submission in its current form. The checklist below may help you in re-examining your manuscript.
While we do accept submissions with graphic violence, we don't accept "snuff" - i.e. death & extreme torture with the aim of sexual titillation. We generally do not accept submissions of nonconsensual sex in which the "victim" gets absolutely no sort of thrill or enjoyment from the acts, or is seriously and /or permanently physically harmed/abused.

The violence reference is not really valid. There is a NC suggestion but it’s not quite as straight forward. Although there are references to sacrifice this is in no way explicit or detailed and is just a historic reference. I have 4 chapters submitted it would be good for them all to be published at once because then there is a decent amount of story to follow. Yes if part one with revisions is rejected the rest just don’t work. As it’s redrafted i can’t see any reason why it should not be approved but of course until it is nothing is guaranteed

If one doesn't go, neither will the rest.

I tried a part 2 one time without a part 1 (think 'Leonard, Part 6'). It didn't go.

It's a generic response (there are half a dozen or so), nothing explicitly tailored to your story. You have to unpack your content against the prompts, figure out if you've inadvertently breached (or knowingly pushed the line), tweak your text or argue the case. Both approaches work.

From what you've hinted in this thread, I'd be looking at both your non-con and your sacrifice scene.

The non-con is not strictly that - let’s say there is room for negotiation. There is no sacrifice scene just a reference to a historical scene. (Word used just 3 times) Arguably there is not enough here to really hang the generic response on in particular with the rewrite. It’s almost as if the premise of the story but it’s valid BDSM and arguably quite mainstream so scratching my head but of course it’s still pending so the rewrite can still hopefully pass. I did a single edit of character name in case this was an issue. The other chapters now up to four are all pending. I will continue to write and working on chapter 5. It may end up being a different and probably much better version of my original even if it never sees the light here which would be odd indeed.

My first few stories took about a week. My most recent was published in 2 days. There could be several factors delaying publication.

So, that was the same rejection notice I got three times for my story that published today. If you haven't already, look through your story to either 1) emphasize the sub's consent *and* enjoyment, or 2) take out the dom's enjoyment. It might also be worth it to clarify what you mean by the sacrifice, and that said sacrifice is in the past.

If you still have problems, and you think it would help, I could beta read it for you. I write BDSM, so I wouldn't be put off by anything.

That would be handy Belle. When I check my chapters the reference is really later in part 2. I don’t think there is anything contentious at all with the redraft. It’s not been rejected again or anything. It’s just sitting in pending (or purgatory, take your pick). Don’t know how best to share part 1 with you. It’s background and character only. It’s only me approaching part 5 now where we have our first Sex (or will when it’s written). Let me know re a share - maybe pm will allow. Thanks as well. Brutal One

PM replied to with my email.

My first story was in pending for 6 days myself (Just published today/yesterday. The 17th, submitted on the 11th)

Thanks Belle, really appreciate the advice. With part 5 and the first sex scene written do you think maybe I should consolidate into one longer single part? I was discussing in the hangout that the key initial 2 character conversation was in 2 parts with part 2 as you see with King’s thoughts. In part 4 we see the same conversation from Michelle’s POV and her feelings (plus some additional bio parts and her journey down for the initial meet.)

As combining parts 1 and 2 make for a better lit story length maybe I resubmit in 2 parts (parts 1&2 as you read) and (parts 3,4 & 5) finishing in effect that first day. At least this firmly establishes our first 2 main characters and the next can elaborate more on the Sophie and Mike characters and a new location the pub. Thoughts ?

Chapter 1 Published!

Thanks all for the comments and support.

EDIT: and part 2 soon after. With first 5 parts submitted I think the publishing will just roll out so great motivation to keep writing the next chapters and of course based on my well defined outline no shortage of ideas as the series unfolds.

EDIT:
Ha! 2 likes for chapter 2 and 1 follower. It’s a decent start so keeps me motivated to get better.
