How long does it take?

I'm new to literotica and without wanting to seem too eager, I'd like to know how long it normally takes for a submitted story to be processed and posted. Are all stories posted or is there some kind of preliminary judging procedure?

Here's the link to the FAQ page: http://www.literotica.com/faq.shtml

It doesn't exactly directly address your questiona bout "preliminary judging" although it does address the requirements for a story being accepted on the "writer's guidelines link:

1. Be sure your story has a sexual theme, unless you are submitting to the Non-Erotic category.

2. No sexual activity involving underage persons will be considered. For the purposes of this site, the minimum legal age is 18.

3. We do not currently accept submissions under 750 words.

...

All stories are read and either accepted or rejected by the site's co-owner and editor-in-chief, Laurel. If she rejects a story, she'll send you an e-mail explaining why.

Thanks Weird Harold!

Your pointers and the link were very useful. Although the stories I've submitted comply with the first two rules, I'm afraid they're much longer than 750 words. They're nearer 4000 words.

What puzzles me though is that I've read lots of stores on literotica that were longer than 750 words.

4,000 words is just fine -- you mis-read the 750 word limit. stories CANNOT be less than 750 words. A 749 word story is rejected. 751 words to 750,000 words (or more) is acceptable.

oops! You're right! I DID misread that! Seems I AM too eager after all!

Maybe it's just me but Fireworks on the Beach doesn't come up from your post. The first one did though.

Well, you're welcome. But I can still only pull up the first one and now all of sudden you're showing four stories.

The other two stories were approved for submission after the first two. That's why more stories are showing up. I still haven't fixed my apostrophe and quotation problem though. Working on it!:(

By gosh-seems fine now:)

I can't help you with quotations and apostrophes though-I'm still trying to find a volunteer editor. I will take a look at your stories later though.

My best to you!

Thanks again for your help Weird Harold. It's strange though, when I tested the links, they took me to the page...

Part of the question remains unanswered, though (the part wich seems most relevant to me, anyways): how long does it usually take for a submitted story to get approved?

I've written and submitted a rather lengthy piece (11,000 words) and I've been waiting a few days now. It LOOKS like it took the original poster of this thread 2 days to get an approval on a submission... is this typical or does the time of approval vary from story to story (vis a vis; how long the story is directly affects the time it takes to get approved)?

I keep checking on my submission status and I see this "not ever approved" message in the "Date" byline. I take it that means it "has not ever been approved" or does this mean that stories of its category are "not ever approved"?

For the nonce, it's an incest story, if that makes a difference.

I think it varies, nightshadow. And I don't think it has anything to do with content. It took my first stories about 3 days to be approved, and the next ones two. But it took my poem only one. I agree that 'not ever approved' is not very well worded. I think 'not yet approved' would be better.

re: "not ever approved": I couldn't agree more- it's definitely misleading!

Thanks for the reply... I'll wait around a few more days before I start getting grumpy. :D

For now, I'm just curious... and, yes, a little anxious. Curious to see how well the story is received and anxious to see it "up."

Laurel had it "fixed" (or it corrected itself by 1230) so it was fixed by the time you checked and posted this.

"Not Ever Approved" is just a way of showing that there is no date to display -- it's the box to the right that says "Pending," "Approved," or "Rejected" that's important. I think the poor wording is a result of the scripts being written by a Russian programmer. I would have used "N/A" instead.

The wait for approval depends on a lot of factors -- story category, length of story, special formatting needs, method of submission, number of other stories submitted concurrently (both by you and by other authors), etc.

If you use the text box and cut and paste your story, it has no special formatting needs, is of moderate length (11,000 words is a moderate length) and there are only about 5-10 stories in the same category submitted that day, it will take 2-3 days.

Uploading a text file with the browse button is comparable to using cut and paste.

In other words, if you submit in a way that you can preview your story, then 2-3 days is normal.

If You submit by uploading a Word (DOC) or Rich Text Format (RTF) format file, then you've added at least a day, and probably two or three to the base approval time -- 3-5 days.

Add another day or two for a really long story -- 15,000 words and up, and a day or two if there are a lot of stories submitted on the same day to spread out the posting dates to fill in for slow story submission days.

Add at least a day if Laurel has to tidy up your story or attend to special needs -- like formatting Italics and bold fonts, placing images for illustrated stories, or linking the audio file for stories with audio.

Since there is only one person, Laurel, who approves stories for posting, you can add in random days of delay for hectic real-life problems and unforseen circumstances.

If you story languishes for more than ten days, you might have some grounds for concern -- my "how to" essay took 15 days before it was approved, but Laurel was on vacation and she had to approve the HTML coding imbedded in it before approval.
