Defragging is a joke. Better to reformat your hard drive every few months, better result

Ya, but I will lose all the stuff that I downloaded. Why does porn take up so much space? Plus I have many many eposides, clips and music video's of anime's that I don't ever want to lose. :)

Start saving for a cd burner! They are relatively cheap and you can free up drive space to download even more porn!

Back it all up onto CD's or floppy's.

If your computer ever crashes, you will lose it all anyway.

It all depends on how often you do it. The first time I did it it took hours just like yours did but then I continued to do it every few weeks and I have it down to a couple of hours.

It also helps if you do a disk sweep and get rid of all of the temp files before doing the defrag as well as shutting down all of your things such as AIM, MSN, Viris Scan, etc because anything like that that is up will interfer with the defrag and kick it back to the beginning of the sequence.

No, I am not a computer geek at all. I have learned the hard way by my own screwups though.

I have a burner, just need to buy the data cd's for them. I think I'd need at least 100 cd's for all the crap I got on this computer. How long does it take to burn a blank cd to full?

Shut down all drivers, devices before you defrag - if it took that long, the drivers, devices tripped it

How do I do that? And it won't damage anything if I do right?

Go to your task bar on the right. Right click and close all programs you can including the virus scanner and no it wont hurt anything. Once the defrag is done reboot and they will all be back on the taskbar.

I did that. I only had the systray and explorer running when I defraged it.

I wish I had known about that before. I couldn't figure out what program that was running and making the defrag stop. Oh, I feel dumb now.

Or you can hit ctrl+alt+delete and brings up the menu and just close out anything thats not systray and explorer. Always keep those 2 up. :)

you don't need systray running either.. I have it turned off completly. I only run in the background.. what needs to be running. Everything else just wastes resources.

Need more info? check here

Virtual Doctor

or if you want to know what can safely be turned off check here Start up

Thanks for the links Freaky, will take a look at them later when I have more time. :)

cibo, how big of a hard drive do you have? and how much memory?

I have a 40 GB Hard drive.. 17 GB used.. with 512 RAM.. it only takes my system on the average 4 hours to do a scan disk and a defrag. I do mine monthly.. any more than that isn't good.

I have a 60 gig HD with 19 gigs taken up so far. And I have 512 Ram. Even tho I haven't defrag'd in maybe 5 months or so. I'll try to do it every 30 days tho.

what rick said...

don't forget even the ones like screen saver that come up per pre-programmed command & make the defrag start all over again

Ok with that large of a HD.. yes, it will take awhile. Especially if you haven't done it in so long. Make sure you clean out your Temp file and the Temporary Internet File (for IE) and your cache (for Netscape) before you do the scandisk and defrag. Thats a couple less things that it needs to deal with.

don't over defrag.. it does more harm than good. (or so I've been told)

Screen Savers are a waste of memory.. turn them off completly.. I see no reason to ever have one active. (IMHO). If you are going to be away from your computer, turn off the monitor.

I have seven partitions on my system. C: is 1Gb and the other six are all 5Gb. It takes longer to defrag C: than it does the others combined.

That's because Defrag writes to a file while it works, then complains that the drive contents have changed so it must start over. It doesn't restart on the other partitions.

Total time to defrag 36Gb on my system about two hours.

Some thing sthat will speed up defrag:

Clean the drives by deleting temp files and internet history before defragging.

Defrag more frequently -- at least once a week.

Partition your drive so that C: is a small as you can get away with -- 1- 5 GB so that the main prtion of your data is on a partition defrag doesn't keep restarting every time defrag updates it's log. (Note: Partitioning your drive requires reformatting, so back up all of your files to CD-RW or Zip disks first.)

Yup, I don't have a screen saver because I don't like them. Now is defragging once a week too much or should I stick to my once a month plan?

I am in no way doubting you.. as you probably know more than I do. But I was told.. to only defrag once a month or so.

Can degfragging more often cause problems?

I assume you're running Windows 98? So long as you have anything before Windows 2000, try using VoptMe. It's a nice little defrag program that can go thru your system in little or no time at all. Works faster and better than Windows defrag, IMO. You can get a trial version here:

http://www.vopt.com/voptme.htm

It also makes it easier to get rid of your temp internet files and a few other space clogging things. I used it and loved it. I'd use it still if it was compatable with win2k.
