How Long Does a Cold Last?

Yesterday I thought I was coming down with something.

Today I know it is a fact.

I don't ever get sick. I cannot for the life of me remember the last time I had a cold. I remember I had the flu 28 years ago.

I do remeber this about being sick, I am the biggest baby and completely helpless.

How long am I going to feel like this? Are there any OTC remedies that actually work? Can someone put me to bed and tuck me in?

A week to ten days.

Best bet is that old stand-by, rest in bed and drink plenty of fluids. OJ or grapefruit juice for preference.

Aspirin helps with the aches and pains.

Other than that, wait it out.

If you just let the cold run its course, a week.

With the best of modern treatment and medical advances, seven days.

Call and ask your Doctor what he/she advises. If you take any medicane on a daily bases then s/he will be able to tell you what is best for you. I find aleve 12 cold and sinus meds work great.

7 days. There is a misconception that you get the cold virus when symptoms exist or when you go out in the cold. You actually get a cold when others do not know they (another has) have one. It takes 2 - 3 days after contact to get one. There is NO CURE for the commn cold - but chicken soup makes you feel good, and contact c takes the edge off.

Better to avoid human contact but LOL - quite impossible.

First response to thread question... long enough.

:D:D Sorry, I'm a smart ass sometimes...

Okay, okay! MOST times. :D Hope you feel better soon.

ROFLMFAO!

Folk wisdom says 9 days: 3 days coming on, 3 days with full-blown symptoms, and 3 days getting over it.

...and remember "feed a cold, starve a fever." ;)

Tea made from ragwort, eye of neute, fennal seed, goat sweat and a dog bone picked up in the dark of the moon. Best thing there is.

It won't make you feel any better, but it'll give you something to do :D

LOL. :D

Feeling a little better.

Thanks for the advice, all.

Got a good night's sleep, lots of water and some guafenicin and echinacia seems to be helping.

While you are ill it will last forever. Once you are better it will seem like a short time. ;)

Two Saturdays ago I went to a film with a friend who'd just come down with a cold. The following Tuesday evening I felt rather miserable, then was pretty knocked out by it on Wednesday and Thursday (slight fever, achey body, stuffed head). I felt the beginnings of recovery on Friday but still missed work, couldn't sit at my computer for more than 15 minutes. Saturday I managed to go to another film with another friend (it involved no more effort than walking half a block from her parked car to the theatre). Sunday I didn't leave the house but found the energy to make leek and potato soup. Today's the seventh day since getting sick, I'm back at work but don't feel 100%, maybe 80%.

Hot tea with bourbon is my relief in such straits as colds and flus provide.

Feeling poorly myself, so I'll give you the recipe for the drink that my girlfriend made for my throat. Boil water and soak either thyme or rosemary & sage in the water. Squeeze a lemon and mix the juice with honey and brandy. Sieve out the herbs and then add the hot water to the mixture. Ignore the fact that it looks horrible and drink. Trust me, it does a job.

I find that giving it to someone else reduces the time by about three days.
You tend to lose friends though.

If you don't treat it - 7 days

If you treat it with everything from the drug store - 7 days
