How is Vote Score Search supposed to work?

I do a simple tag search for "pregnant" sorted by vote score I get this result:

The first three have a 5.0 score, but arn't "hot" and seem to have very little activity.

the first one that is "hot" is "A.H. Ch. 09" with a 4.95.

my suspicion is that the first three have much lower traffic than the rest. I can't image having a lot of traffic & maintaining a perfect 5.0 score?

If I switch the tag to "impregnation" and search, my top result is this:

It's not "hot" and apparently has no "vote score" (star?)

further down the list is t his:

it has a vote score, it is "HOT" it looks like the traffic (red) is lower, but the favorites is higher..

so... please tell my "why does non-hot/no vote score" posts rank higher in a vote score list?

Hot is a flag....4.5+ and a minimum of votes, that's it. You aren't sorting by 'hot or not' you are sorting by score. Why would the algorithm look at other fields if you are asking it to sort by score?

Likewise, you aren't sorting by number of favorites, so why would that be included in the ranking?

"Hot" means a score of 4.5 or better from at least 10 votes. I've had the Hot rating from as few as 120 views on occasion. It doesn't mean the story is good, or widely read, or anything beyond the fact that at least 10 people voted on it and most of them liked it.

I'm questioning because, especially with the "seducing his father" is at the top of the list, but appears to have no votes. I did not realize that hot was simply a tag. so, I want to know how those with either no stars, or those with 5.0 and little traffic are at the top of the list... maybe it's just a pet peeve but it's BOTHERING me.

Presumably the author turned off voting on that story. I don't know for sure how that affects its ranking, but presumably the system counts it as a perfect 5-star rating.

if you want only the "hot" stories, click the "gear" button in the search page to expand the options and select "most popular". From what I remember this will only show the ones marked with the red H. Additionally, sort by "Vote Score" so that the highest rated are at the top

It's ranked only on the score at any point in time. The Red H doesn't factor into it. And as @StillStunned notes, turning off voting at any point preserves the score at that point, but takes the vote count away.

shouldn't that be a Null instead of starting at 5 points then? I feel that skews the results.
