I realize getting my first book published is eons into the future but I'm curious now. I've heard of editors but never realized what they did until I submitted a story here (thanks btw to the patience of those who have helped me ;) ). When you submit a book to a publisher is the editing part of their service? Is it an extra fee/deduction from whatever royalty/payment?

I can't answer from personal experience, but I do know that print publishers use several levels of editing, rangng froom simple proof reading to detailed story editing. Most, if not all, are employees of the publisher and should be "part of the service."

The specific details of whether you pay extra for a "story editor" or "copy editor" would logically be spelled out in the contract you sign with the publisher.

PS: I personally would be very cautious about signing on with a publisher that charged for editing services.
