As far as I know? Imagination and sticking to realism as much as possible. Like with reading a story or watching something like porn, if you're able to put yourself into the words, you're able to do it.

"It" constitutes basically the same as cybering; making actions that reflect what would happen in real life, speaking like you would if your owner / slave was there with you, and in some cases (such as pain, suffocation, etc) figuring out your real life limits to translate that to words.

It definitely won't compare to the real thing... but what in words does compared to real life? That's all I can say.

With respect to D/s, the submissive can be given tasks to do, and report back to their Domme/Dom. I presume the reporting can be done by phone, cam, camera, e-mail, etc.

I once had a domme who gave me a few tasks, but they felt more like chores than anything else.
