Hey All,

With my recent return, I've noticed something. It's kind of a big thing too. You see, the lounge seems to have turned into a smaller version of the Playground, with the one off threads, and one answer threads.

That's not why I love it here.

You see, I love coming here for the chance to be Aus as a character (and a fine one she is!). Aus is me, as a writer and sometimes a better version of myself, and sometimes she's nothing but trouble. It's all very meta.

We are all writers, it's the one thing we all pretty much have in common, we LOVE to write. We love talking about our threads, enacting and bringing others to our threads. We have our own individual threads, believe me, I love my Chateau, and I've brought many people there to talk with, socialize, and to expand on, and play with my writing abilities.

There used to be so many Lounge threads!
The Pearl (a favorite of mine)
Cloud Nine (I used to have a personal thread there too)
Lily's (a place that terrified me to enter, cause I've always been in awe of Lily)
Bad Apple Inn (I was drinking Aus into a stupor there when I first met Chronie, he drank me under the table)
Minx's Boudoir (I met many writer's there and carried on many hijinks with the wife)

I know I'm not alone in my experiences.

Thing is, I am beginning to wonder if we as a group would rather continue the one offs, the easy threads, or if we should strive to bring back and open more actual lounge threads. I realize that the influx of newbies made it easy to stay with the one off threads.

With this, I thought I'd ask and see what you all thought.

Aus:heart:

*Note- I'm not advocating the death of the one off, but perhaps a return to the RP, which many of us are VERY good at.

I have to agree, the lounge threads where we can be 'ourselves' (in whatever form that might be) were and are awesome.

In my experience though to newbies they can seem a little intimidating and sometimes cliquey which is why I think 'one off' threads definitely have a place here in the lounge as well as, for those of us in very different time zones, they allow some interaction between people when the lounge threads are quiet.

I think there is a place for both but I agree, perhaps it's time for a renewal of some lounge threads, or even the introduction of some new ones :D

I remember coming here when I was a newb, and it was terrifying! I couldn't help myself though, I just loved the concept of writing me as me. You do bring up a very valid problem. How can we help those newbs understand the intricacies of lounge writing?

Personally...

I've learned to keep my mouth shut, so what ever works is good.

This is a whole nother bag of something else. I personally have written with you in several different places and find nothing wrong with your writing. You are concise in your brevity and that absolutely works for you.

So this, is unhelpful at best, especially when you have been a lounger for so long. There is no reason for you to keep your mouth shut, you have as much say as anyone else.

Out with it, little one.

That is my only worry, if the one off threads died off I do think newbies might be put off trying to join in established threads and plays for fear of interrupting things going on, upsetting 'veteran posters' etc. etc.

Perhaps some kind of introduction post that we have stickied at the top of the forum?
A little introduction with some suggested thread links along with a little bit about etiquette and the like?

I very much like this idea.

Hmmm...

IMHO, I think a thread where you stay in character at all times, whether it be your AV character or whatnot, just stay in character.

Of course that can get tricky because you'll have constant RPs going on and they're the ones that will be quite cliquey but those should be taken right to a one-off thread where you can continue in private (not so private since we can all read it...so :p )

We as veterans know when to take something off to our own threads, it's just something you learn from being here so long...suddenly feels old...

So perhaps, leave the "Introduce Yourself" thread, create another one where the n00bs can have some place to come in and say hi in a relaxing manner, in character so they can get adjusted to writing as their character...

I'm rambling...

I have no idea what the lounge threads are. Are they, the ones that people make and they put their ideas and threads in them and stuff like that, and then others come in and sometimes some writing happens?

I can't believe I agree with you :p

Indeed, that's exactly why I rarely post in any threads in the lounge, and it's why I made my thread to start talking to people.

I was actually thinking about making my own lounge thread, but maybe in a couple more weeks when I get to know enough people to actually have a purpose to create a thread like that.

I think one reason as to why there are one-line threads is because there is the forum for roleplaying, and this is a lounge, so maybe some people don't see the point of having this one also for roleplaying. Maybe I understood the concept of the lounge thread wrong though.

Thank you, Se7en for coming in and being honest. I mean that.

A lounge thread looks like what the China Pearl Inn is, in fact, it's one of the oldest threads around here.

Basically, most often in a lounge thread you're playing you. A lot of the playing around, the *Actions* that you see in your own thread are only much more pronounced.

For example;
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Walking in here, I notice the silence at first, but I'm curious about what is happening and I begin to investigate. Ah! There goes Se7en again with all the questions. He's so curious!
Making myself a glass of tea, I head over to the couch and sit down across from him, a smile in his general direction, I know I'm not one of his favorites...but fuck it.
"How goes it Se7en?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Does it sorta kinda make sense now?

Walks in again cautiously, making one step forward and three backward, thinking the problematic lady, Aus, might have laid some traps that activate upon Lord fuzzy pants arrival. Oddly enough, nothing happens. He keeps his guard up and sits down making sure no glue or some other nasty adhesive was laid there prior to his arrival. He looks at Aus cautiously and nods while his lips curve in a little smile You are welcome, and it's going pretty well, kinda cozy.

giggles and claps

Very good! There isn't much more to it than that!

smiles over at him in a salute

Try the China Pearl. CG is quite the host. I, myself have needed to pop in there, since my return. Dues must be paid. But I do think you'll succeed here. Any other questions?

Smiles and tips his hat

Wait a minute I am wearing a hat? Since when?

Ponders the implications and whether he is going crazy or not

I will sure try it, but it has a billion posts, how am I supposed to pop in the thread without reading all that?

Thinks she made a mistake asking if he has more questions, as his curiously knows no bounds

You don't have to read all the posts, when looking at joining or writing in a lounge thread, the most important post will be the first post. In it, the thread owner, will detail whether it's an open or closed thread, and they will also detail the decor and the rules for that thread, so always read the first post at least!

If it's open, then join in at any point. You can walk through the door, mystically appear, pop in, come crashing through the door, whatever works for you. Then you say hi to those who are present, if there are any present and integrate yourself into the action that is currently happening. If there isn't anything happening, do something! Lots of people will enter a lounge if someone else is there... and sometimes they won't.

If the thread is closed... it's a different ball game. If you don't know the thread owner, say in the case of my Chateau (which is my closed thread), you can leave a note at the door, if you haven't been invited in. But if you do, say.. in DW's Mansion, and you're friends with that person, then most of the time that thread is open to you.

For instance, Brit's cottage, it's a closed thread. If she was in the middle of posting a scene there with someone, you may not want to interrupt, depending on where she is in the action. I've left a quick note and flowers for her, just before she's been in scene with someone. It's a nice thing to do. Yeishia, has in the past left flowers and notes in all the closed threads for holidays. Think of the closed threads... as people's homes. Unless you knew them really well, you wouldn't pop in unannounced.

Am I being clear?

I see, looks easy enough.

Another reason why some people aren't interested in those lounge threads is the time factor, if you open up a thread like that and it becomes popular, you have to read everything in it and respond to it or it dies. Also, if you pop in people's threads then its rude to not follow what happens after it. So, I guess some people just save themselves the hassle because its time-consuming and would rather use that time to reply to their story threads.

Not necessarily.

What she said.

I have several lounge threads that I don't keep up with all the time. And you can always bring a lounge back. If you want to be a thread owner that reads all the posts and you have the time and energy, then by all means, do so.

But most of the time, you can casually check in and out, and generally keep an eye on things without much of a time crunch. Plus, some of those posts are genuinely awesome, and you want to read them, cause the people in the lounge are awesome.

I used to read all the stuff between Nina and Jokas Wild, because they bounce off each other in awesomely hilarious ways. I'll read what my Angel writes cause I love her charm and drunkenness.

Using your lounge time to sharpen your tools in your SRP writing is a great way to look at it.
