How Do You Solve A Problem Like Obama?

The tv talkshow hosts are stymied by Obama. No one wants to joke about him for fear of repercussions. This makes Obama the first presidential candidate in history to escape the harpoons of comedians.

So! Does this doom Obama?

The current New Yorker lampoons him and the Mrs on the cover: him dressed as a Muslim and she with a gun on her back. I don't know what the gag is though, just saw it on TV.

This will be interesting. Of course race will be an issue without being an issue while being an issue without being one.

I think they'll get Obama for being a Mr Goody Two-Shoes/Teacher's Pet/Idealist and for being so young and inexperienced.

You've got to ask yourself: If he were white, how would you go after him?

DOC

I know how I'd go after him, but I think I'd cause riots doing it. I'd go for his youth and inexperience, and tag him as Baby Obama. I'd tag his wife as every famous Amazon in the history of the world.

Don't be silly. It's okay to compare a white man to a monkey, but not a black man. It's called "equal protection under the law" or something like that.

No. It's called, "300 years of being treated like apes." I can explain the fine points to you if you don't get it.

It's too bad too, because Obama really does look like Curious George.

I remember hearing something about that from Rush's camp.

I don't really see it, though.

But Bush and the monkey comparison? That's big and bad.

It'll be interesting to see how the comedians and politicos walk the tightrope.

Admittedly, I'm not a lawyer, but it is my understanding that the Fourteenth Amendment trumps feel-good liberal clap-trap.......Carney

Here's an original thread, huh?

Step 1. Read New York Times: Want Obama in a Punch Line? First, Find a Joke

Step 2. Start a Thread.

No one wants to joke about him for fear of repercussions.

The article suggests that "the reason cited by most of those involved in the shows is that a fundamental factor is so far missing in Mr. Obama: There is no comedic “take” on him, nothing easy to turn to for an easy laugh, like allegations of Bill Clinton’s womanizing, or President Bush’s goofy bumbling or Al Gore’s robotic persona. . . . Of course, the question of race is also mentioned as one reason Mr. Obama has proved to be so elusive a target for satire."

But if you want to pretend that that's the main reason, you feel free. After all, that's why nobody makes fun of Al Sharpton and Don King.

Here's the potential dynamic:

How do you tell an individual is racist? He criticizes Obama.

If that plays out it's the perfect gambit for a pol to avoid accountability and critical examination.

It's not an implausible concern. We saw a preview this spring with Bill Clinton's remark that some Obama claims were "a fairy tale." The storyline in the MSM instantly became the Clintons' "sly racist" tactics.

BS

I read an interesting article about Presidential candidates today. The article was written before Obama came along.

The article says Americans dont generally like or elect candidates who come across as book-smart and too serious. Carter, Mondull, Dukakis, BUSH1, Dole, Gore, and Kerry are listed as bookish with no sense of humor. Reagan, Clinton, and Bush2 are good ole boys.

If this is accurate Obama is in trouble.

ROXANNE

Exactly. Obama is gonna get the reputation as a glass-jawed, candy-ass who cant handle criticsm.

They want somthing to rip on go after that clean and perfect attitude they try to show him in. I sorry I have lived on the IN/IL border all my life seen how how chicago politics work.

As for blacks and what their forfather had to go through. I wish it had never happen. But if we are ever to get past it, then we need to leave it in the past. Besides my People where here before any of ya'll now if you want to talk about an opressed people....

I glade I am noit the only one that thinks Obama looks Like Curious George. No I don't mean that as a racset remark. Theres no two ways about it he just looks like him get over it.

If can't handle the criticsm now, whats he going to do when he has to deal with foreign leaders that all ready have no respect for this country?

Yeah, well, I'm really going to worry about this. Pacing the floor because Jay Leno can't think of any Obama jokes.

I've already seen an Obama impersonator on late night TV, in a game show parody that included a Hillary clone and a McCain clone, and I don't even watch that much TV.

According to a writer who did one of the Obama stories in the latest New Yorker, the point of the offensive cover was to draw attention to the techniques the Right will use to prejudice voters. Unfortunately, without that information, many will misconstrue the motive for running the cartoon on the cover. Satire can be a very tricky business when the public is too dimwitted to understand it.

Yes.

My husband and I were saying the same thing.

Obama is whining about the New Yorker cover, in the paper today. It insults Muslims.

Of course it insults Muslims, Americans hate Muslims.

And when he defends Muslims he confirms the message on the cover.

Well, yes. There are some, maybe a good number, of narrow-minded ignorant bigots who hate all Muslims simply because of the religion they've chosen to practice. Now there's a crowd worth pandering to.

I'm watching Obama at this moment on TV.

He said, "Yes, it was satire. I think they failed, but bottom line, it's a cartoon. That's why we have the First Amendment, Larry."

He didn't seem to be whining.

I guess it's what you choose to see.
