I have a hell of a time getting my avs the right size does anyone have a simple way to explain this to me? Thank You

It might not be the most sophisticated way to go about it, but I find Irfanview is one of the best ways to resize quickly and easily.

Do a google search and you will find it immediately. :)

Yup, Go here and there's a very nice tutorial on Irfanview, and how the basics of it work: Irfanview Tutorial

The only difference you will find is, the tutorial is slightly outdated cause the newer versions of irfanview also have a slider dealio where you can also change the resolution of the pics when you save them. But the basics are the same.

I feel badly...I was too lazy to post the link. *sigh*

What a lazy day in Tennessee...

Irfanview is the simplest (and cheapest) solution to resizing problems because it allows you to resize pictures by specifying the new dimensions in pixels.

Almost any image editor can resize pictures, but they're confusing because they don't normally measure images in pixels because they're oriented towards printing photos and use measurement units suitable for that.

Also, some image editors use "resample" instead of "resize" for the function that changes the actual pixel count of the image. Others require you to change the picture size first and then change the "canvas" size before you can save a truly resized image.

You don't necesarily need another program for resizing pictures if youcn figure out the peculiarities of your image editor, but having "the right tool for the right job" almost always makes the job easier.

PaintShop Pro from www.jasc.com is another good program for resizing images if you do enough image editing to make the $125 cost worth it. It does have more image editing capabilities than irfanview.

MS Photo Editor does a decent job of resizing most pictures and is simple to use (it is part of the MS Office package) but it has some problems with distorting some images because it only uses one algorithm for resampling. It's also not good enough to justify the cost of MS Office just for the photo editor. ;)

Adobe Software image processers like PhotoShop and PhotoDeluxe have what are probablythe best image editing features for customizing an image -- things like adding christmas lights or valentine's hearts to your basic avatar -- and they do a decent job of resizing difficult images; once you figure out how to make them "think" in pixels.

In short, you need to either figure out the quirks of the program you're using or acquire a program that's easier to use -- and that won't cost you an arm and a leg for features you'll never use.

IrfanView fits the bill for most people because it's free, easy to use for resizing, and can read almost any image format. (Plus there are dozens of people here who use irfanview and can help with any questions.)
