How do you post?

Reading through some of the various posts then starting to reply and not a few times made me wonder about others here, so I'll ask:

How do you post here on AH (or other forums)?

Do you use another editor/word processor and cut/paste back into the posting applet?

Are you an impulse poster? Hit reply/quote/post, and type out the first thing that comes to mind and send it.

Are you the self editor? Preview and look carefully at your spelling & grammar before firing it off.

Do you methodically read each and every entry on a thread before replying?

Are you a self examiner? Preview your reply and stop and think how various others may interpret it?

(With some of the above) Do you discard your posts before submitting them? Often?

Are you a go back & fix it laterer? You don't worry about getting it right because you can go back and "edit post".

Are you a self flagellator? Only after you've posted, and despite how much thought you put into it before hand, repeatedly smack yourself after you've seen what you've written.

OK, what else am I missing?

---
Perhaps these examples come to mind because I do them often. (Though almost never the impulse poster.)

I find I discard about half of all posts I write. By "discard", I don't mean do-over: I stop and choose not to post anything. I think that means I qualify as some class of obsessive compulsive. (Sometimes it's because what I wrote is not as funny as I thought, or others because I know it will be misunderstood, etc. --sometimes even after spending a half hour writing the post.) Then there's always the "Joke 'em if they can't take a fuck" posts... those are the ones I see not quite so necessary but, so what.

But I don't think I've ever not clicked preview. And, because I try and self edit before hand, I always self flagellate when I see the coma in the wrong place later...

I post directly into the reply... and not really edit.

But I do delete about 1/2 - 2/3 of my potentials posts.

Sincerely,
ElSol

I think for me it depends on the thread. There are some that I post on, like last, where it doesn't matter what the hell I say so I don't worry about it. On other, more serious threads, I do try to put some thought into it. I do tend to edit them, or if I find mistakes I go back and edit it out later. I have been known to write a whole post and then not even submit it because I wasn't sure if I was being clear or if it was even worth saying.
And yes, there have been times I have really regretted certain things I've said in posts. Just like in RL, things get said that shouldn't.

Shit, I'm going to have to make some serious changes. I thought this was a bit like IM. You mean we have to live with what we say??

I shouldn't tell you this twice in one day. But I  you!

Very carefully (Lame, but it seemed as though someone had to say it...)

No not lame at all: expected, and, yes, required.

Lame is obscure, multi dimensional, recursive/referential attempts at humor that nobody gets. You know, like when you find everyone stops and looks at you because you're the only one chuckling...

(It comes from thinking too much. But then I like to take that as being "too considerate".)

It totally depends on the thread.

Chatty and I just type and post..sometimes go back to pick up a typo.

Authorly...I tend to look over my posts a fair bit....but not always. essentially I'm lazy and used to chat site chatting (how i got on the net in the first place) and so I'm used to there being no going back *L*

Debate ...I think before i post. I often type and discard all posts either to start again or not post at all. I try hard not to step on folks toes...to keep calm, to not go to personal jibes. I try at least...and i know I've not always been so...thoughtful i guess.

Mostly i just type, might go back and edit later, occassionally i read over what's written..mostly it just goes on out there.

Impulsive -thats me :)

Thinking too much, eh? I'm not in much danger of that these days...

Not meant to having offended you. :rose:
Not possible to offend me. And I never look for offense in what people say to me. Having absolutely no self esteem is a great strength that way. Unfortunately, unoffendability is very often offensive to others.... (That and my allergy to using emoticons)

No.

Absolutely not. I over react way off the scale. I usually count to 10 before even considering posting if it touches me at all.

Are you the self editor? Preview and look carefully at your spelling & grammar before firing it off.
I never write anything correctly with first try... :p

Do you methodically read each and every entry on a thread before replying?
I try.

Are you a self examiner? Preview your reply and stop and think how various others may interpret it?
Yes.

(With some of the above) Do you discard your posts before submitting them? Often?
Yes. And yes.

OK, what else am I missing?
Maybe those classical "do you care what other posters think about you", "do you take posts personally" etc

Skipped those "no", "no" things :)

It better than being dead.
Let's not rush to a conclusion, the experiment's not over yet. For all any of us know death may infact be far more preferable to thinking way too much.

Wait, I did it again didn't I?

Now I'm forced to abuse you.

Didn't I kill you off in another thread? or was that just a pleasant dream?

It was a dream, remember? You already PMed me about it. You thought you were biting my neck and sucking my blood, but when you woke up you found you'd chewed through the hot water bottle.

Please do, somebody should... I was just smacking myself for not being clever enough to add "Somebody shoot me" after the "I did it again" that would have been much more witty... What's that french phrase again? "esprit d'escargot"?

Yeah, I thought about those, but they might fall into the "how do you deal with things..." But if you delete posts before submitting, you must care a little what others think about you, right?

I post like it's going out of fashion. And I'm impulsive. Very impulsive, as I keep proving to myself. Never a dull moment with me, though. I'm also a chatty cow. I do love to talk. :p

. No. Never. Okay…very, very seldom.

Are you the self editor? Preview and look carefully at your spelling & grammar before firing it off. Yes, yes, yes, yes. And I still miss very obvious mistakes.

Do you methodically read each and every entry on a thread before replying? I try, which is why I also tend to avoid threads with a great whopping lot of pontificating. It bothers me when people don't read the other posts; then they charge in on the last page and walk all over a point that had already been made on page one and act like they're giving new information. It feels disrespectful, to me.

Are you a self examiner? Preview your reply and stop and think how various others may interpret it? Yes, yes, yes, yes. Hyper-vigilance bites.

(With some of the above) Do you discard your posts before submitting them? Often? Yes, I discard more than half of my replies.

Are you a go back & fix it laterer? You don't worry about getting it right because you can go back and "edit post". No, not per your description. I will edit if there is an error, or to add info, or if I decide I should have kept my mouth shut in the first place, but I won't knowingly post an error with the intention of fixing it later.

Are you a self flagellator? Only after you've posted, and despite how much thought you put into it before hand, repeatedly smack yourself after you've seen what you've written. Yes, yes, yes, yes.

Luck,

Yui

Erratic, irregular, impulsive poster here.

I almost always edit my post directly after writing, becaue I'm a fucktard speller, so there are always major typos.

I discard half of the longer, more thought-out posts I make, because I read them over before posting, and can't understand what I've just written.

How do I post?

Closing in on 5000 in three months, I would have to say impulsively and frequently. I do tend to proofread them before I hit "submit" and I preview if I have attached a picture or done some formatting.
