How do you give a single person pov story depth

I'm currently finishing up chapter 5 of Wesley's Woman, which was my first real attempt to create a more intricate storyline and several subplots in so long I've forgotten how. The most useful critiques I've gotten have involved how I switched from a 1rst to 3rd person pov on several occasion. For me, as the writer, I thought my little line of ***** across the page would work as a pov switch indicator. And while that may have worked, it seems to have tripped up the pace or the ease of reading for many people. So my conundrum is this...if you want to tell a story from first person pov, and add subplots (which obviously means including scenes where your protagonist isn't present) how do you change point of view. Or do you just suppress the desire to include that first person perspective and write completely in third?

I enjoyed writing in first person this time around, but found out how difficult it is, especially in a several chapter length story.

For examples of what I mean, the link to my stories is in my sig line.

Thanks :)

How about asking questions that the ready can guess the answer to based on what the POV says?

I started dating this guy would dumped my best friend? Yada, yada, yada. Why is Kim upset with me? She has never acted this way before. I've been calling her, but she refuses my calls.

Which would work if the seperate scene weren't vital to the subplot. See chapter two to get the best idea of what I'm talking about.

I see the difficulty. Like old Disney movies. Sorry, I'm not much help. I like the way you did it. I was able to follow it with no problems.

It is/was good, but I wonder whether your disclaimer is strong enough (legally). I suggest you put the standard Celebrity Story disclaimer on, as I assume a lawyer advised on that.

It worked fine for me, also.

Either have longer interjections and make them chapters with little titles, or just switch and hope the reader can keep up. Of course, the most common answer is to use a little line of ***.
It is worth remembering that the parts you split your story in to to publish on Lit do not have to be single chapters. Proper chapter headings help a lot, but title each published chunk as Part N.

But you made a much better job of it than most Lit writers.

Actually, chapter three has both the celebrity story disclaimer as well as my own. Some lit approver is looking out for me :) This was also my first piece of fan fic and I wasn't sure what the rules were, but I generally have seen stuff like mine on it. To the best of my knowledge, as long as I don't intend to publish it anywhere but a little online community, it's legal. But the celeb disclaimer is on chap 3, hopefully 4 when it's approved and I'll put it on five as well.

blush...thanks :)

If you publish to one other persom, or to a million it makes no difference. As to Lit being "little" with the average story getting upwards of 10,000 views, and some as many as half a million, I think it's one of the larger ones.

semantics semantics :)

My story has actually been moved to the celeb category which from what I understand helps protect it.

Oh, I agree and part 3 is protected better, but saying "semantics, semantics" won't get much sympathy if a big company sues you for breach of copyright.

I don't mean to seem heavy, but two students in the UK were sued for millions by McDonalds for using their name in a polemic.

Thanks for the concern, and I do appreciate it. I've actually had the entire story moved over there and have the protection on all the chapters. I don't want to get sued either :(
