How do you deal with writer's block?

I find the best thing to do is to simply write whatever comes into your head. It will be crap and it will embarrass you, but just write it. Now leave it a while, come back to it, and make any changes you want to improve it. Through this process you should at least be able to create inspiration for other ideas even if you're not happy with what you've written in this period.

This usually works for me anyway. It takes time but at the end of the day I just have to force myself to write.

A good strategy for constipation, too.

I have a strategy for dealing with writer's block that occurs in the middle of a story, but what you are describing is more severe, more of a complete lack of anything to write about. I haven't encountered that situation yet.

I keep a file of story ideas, some are only a sentence or two, some are several paragraphs, and a few are several pages. This gives me a bank of ideas I can always turn to where there is always something I can sit down and work on constructively. I'm never at a total loss for material.

Another strategy I have read about is to just write something every day. It doesn't have to be a story or even a part of a story, just write for the purpose of sharpening your skills. Write letters. Write restaurant reviews. Write TV episode recaps. Just spend a part of time each day writing, and at night when you are laying in bed think of those story ideas. Eventually, I hope, you will be able to put those ideas on paper.
