How do votes work?

I thought I had voting all figured out (because it was fairly simple) but now I'm questioning myself. In the members site under Submissions/View, the site shows you a rating and the number of votes it received... How come the number of votes decreases sometimes? Is it not measured over the whole lifetime of the story? I have a print out showing my three stories as having received 19, 10, and 11 votes - today it shows 17, 12, and 10.

Sorry if this is covered somewhere else but I searched the forum and FAQ without being able to find an answer for this.

Thanks,

Peter.

From time to time, especially during a themed contest such as Summer Lovin' which finished recently, a bot sweeps the votes for duplicates and irregular voting patterns.

How it operates is a mystery. The usual result is fewer votes but a higher rating unless all your friends have been giving you duplicate and triplicate "5" votes.

Then I must have no friends because that's what happened - all ratings went up a little. Thank you for explaining :)

Dumb question but...

...how do you view the actual breakdown of votes for one of your stories please?

I'm sure I did this the other day, but now I can't find the button.

Or did I dream it?

You can't see the individual votes anywhere. The only way you can figure it out ( within a certain margin of error ) is to keep close track and do the math.
