How do some authors get so many readers?

Do they advertise somewhere? Are they so well known and popular that readers automatically go to their work?

Or is there another reason?

To get nearly three quarters of a million readers in one year is phenomenal.

and:

1,640,497 'A' My Name is Alice Emmah 08/18/01 over 1 and a half million readers (or clicks) between 18 Aug 2001 and 8 March 2004 (2 and a half years).

How do they do it?

I can't answer for the first one, but I suspect it is also high on the list for popular category.

The second story though dates from before the story index was randomized -- it was alway on page one of the index and it has a catchy name. If it's also goo enoughto scor well, it would pick up views from both the top list for it's category and for the overall top ratings list.

The second story also dates from the days when the site didn't have so many stories that the competition for reads and votes made a catchy title and a good blurb almost as important as the story.

One other minor factor is that an author can add as manyviews to a story as they wish -- either deliberately or by obsessively checking their story. The addition of public comments will add a good many of this type of view as authors check in five or ten times a day to check on the commments.

Hi, Harold. You know, it isn't necessary to go to the story to see about new PC's. You can more easily go to your sumbissions page to check on new PC's and then go from there.

They've said it mate, personally I always open my stories when I visit, they'd have no bloody views otherwise:D

The answer is incest.

Make a lot of it, very juicy. I tried it once and passed 100,000 reads quite readily. (Of course 'reads' aren't really reads, they are just opening of the first page. But if 10% are real reads, that's a lot. ) Also the playing field is level; everyone is getting credit for first pages glanced at.

As said, there is historically an advantage to stories whose title begins with A; and since reads are cumulative, "A" my name is Emmah, holds an unconquerable lead. And it's not bad.

Best,
J.

PS Odd thing. In many threads, it stated by dozens of posters, overwhelmingly so, that they have NO interest or inclination to incest. We have a very angelic crowd or writers and self-declared readers here!

Yes, I know that, but does the typical author?
