in category?
I'm new to posting my stories although I have been reading here on Lit for a couple of years now. I've been lucky enough to get some readers who enjoy my stories enough to want to see more. I was just wondering what the experience has been for writers who switch categories. For example, if you've usually written Romance and suddenly decided to write BDSM, have readers resented that?

If you've built up a fan base who likes the stories you write in a certain category, then I can see how you're going to have problems if you don't give your readers what they want. A good way to move to another category is use another nick, and mention it in your author profile if you're afraid that moving is going to have a negative effect on your stories.

I very much hope that doesn't happen, especially since I'm currently neck-deep in the Survivor contest and plan on writing a different story in almost all (if not all) categories. It would be devastating to get a backlash because of that!

I've never noticed any complaints from my readers (all 3 of them) when I change categories...

Nope, haven't had any of my readers complain about that.

A fair number will read anything I place in front of them. ;)

Oh wait. One did complain, once. That's it though.

Of course they will!! They know quality writing when they see it. :rose:

Someone who doesn't actually write in one category all the time and build up a fan base shouldn't have that problem. :)

Thanks for the responses. I figure since writing erotica somewhat seriously is a new thing for me, I'd try to write in various categories to see where I am most comfortable..

Hey, where did you official V-Day elf/pixie with the bow and arrow go?
It's a cupid! And I was keeping it for after my story was up, but now I think I'll go with this. :)

Btw, we're threadjacking the poor girl's first thread.

Oops...threadjacking over... :D

I've not only been crucified by the fanbase for jumping category, I've been nailed up for not updating the right story in the same category *laugh*

If you've mostly stuck to one cat for a long time, you may have some issues, but it takes quite a bit of slamming a cat for that to happen.

After those first few hits, I created an Alt to post things under on occasion, just to keep the regulars on my other stories from complaining when I get a wild idea that I simply have to write.

Hm, so I guess I better write across categories now before I (hopefully) have fans.

If you experiment early, odds are you'll have a broader range of readers, which should eliminate some of the mobs I've had gathered outside my window with torches and pitchforks on occasion *laugh*

If you ever settle into a category you prefer though, watch out! ( Or create an alternate pen name for those off-your-usual-cat stories )

I enjoyed doing the survivor contest last year, because it gave me a great challenge to write in each category. I'd recommend to anyone that is new at writing, just because it is a goal to set. . . to attempt to write in each one they provide. :D
