How do I stop this from happeniing?

Several times a day my phone rings, and there is nobody at all on the line -- not even a robot.

How do I put a stop to this? I'm already on the Do Not Call list.

If you have an iPhone you can set it so it only accepts calls from people in your contact list. Every other call will be silenced.

Well, I can't do that -- I'm looking for work, can't afford to miss any calls from strangers.

With latest iOS, you can screen callers and they have to announce what they are calling about

Yes, as I understand it, it doesn’t ring until they announce what they are calling.

If you are looking for work, I think the phone needs to ring and you need to accept any and all calls.

Unfortunately you'll have to take all phone calls. I get about 5-8 calls a day - mostly spam - or at least I get Spam Possibility and Telemarketer that shows up on my phone. Sometimes the doctor's office is in that mess so I often judge off the area code though I know it can be faked.
