Awhile back my computer got infected with the W.Maker97.A virus (or something like that) and I didn't bother fixing it right away bec. it didn't seem to really do anything. But now I can't send email attachments, so I want to get rid of it...

I've been to several of the sites, but they all charge. Is there a way to do it myself or perhaps a site that will do it for free?

Oh, you have a computer virus. 'fraid I don't know much about them, so I can't help you much. I'm sure WH in all his technological learnedness will be along shortly with the info you're looking for, though.

But in the meantime, I think I may still be able to bill your insurance company for a doctor's visit. ;)

Hey, I might have viruses too!

I was writing something about charkas in Word and low and behold, my Task Manager is now running a program called 'Chkras' all the time.

Oh yeah and sometimes, my net connection fails on me and it says.. okay, here's the message it gives me. :
"A network error occurred

Unable to connect to server (TCP Error: not enough memory)
The server may be down or unreachable

Try connecting again later."

Now if I leave my computer on and try to connect later it will give me the same message no matter how later I connect. However, if I shut down and restart my computer there'll be no problem - for awhile at least. No matter which program I use to log on I get the same problem.

Sometimes I'll go into Task Manager and it will say Zcast [Not Responding] and 7616683 (something like that) [not Responding] but the numbers program is never shown until after the problem starts.

Well, maybe those aren't viruses but I could use a solution.. Any takers?
Hope that made sense.

Thanks guys!

Hey Ollie, check your mail!

Never, if I find anything out, I'll let you know!

And Thank you, Ezzy. I'll try it and see.

I use PC-Cillin from Trend Microsystems. It has a pretty good record of removing the few viruses viruses I've been infected with. The one virus it couldn't remove, it quarantined so I knew which file needed to be replaced.

My daughter on the other hand, relies on the McAfee's virus protection that came with her computer. She has had to reformat and reload the software from CD-ROM twice because of virus infections.

I have a friend who manages to collect a lot of computer problems (some of them are genuine viruses, others are inadvertant file deletions) and he goes the reformat and reload route about four times a year.

One thing to remember about virus removal is that if there is a virus running you are not likely to be successful in removing it permanently. Part of the installation process for PC-Cillin is the creation of a "clean" disk to boot the computer from when a virus is found in memory.

Thank you for your help, WH. This will definitely help me out. The main thing I was concerned about was possibly having to run the restore disk, thus losing all my files. I think this will help me...
