An online environment is no different from real life, treat your fellow posters with respect and you will receive respect in return. You need to make threads of interest and post in existing threads, let everyone get to know you and want to interact with you. At that point, you might be able to privately messages someone for some personal interaction.
Whatever you do, tread cautiously in the PM department, as it could land you in the PM Asshat thread.
