How did you get into writing smut?

For a long time I have had interest in writing one, I'm quite new to it, so I wondered how y'all started.
Did you have experience with writing before that or erotica is how you began?

Once upon a time, when the young gods walked the earth and the smartphone hadn't been invented, and reading lights didn't yet exist on coaches (long-distance buses), doodling on a notepad in the gloom was the only way to pass the time on my way to or from my partner who lived over two hours away.

I started writing. Since then I've written the odd bit of non-porn and my day job is based on writing, but quite bluntly, the porn gets the most audience and kudos.

I had not written any fiction for fifty years when I wrote my first story for here. The sex was fairly tame. I know others were already accomplished writers. Everyone has their own path. Write what you are feeling. This is mostly a supportive group, but we do have our squabbles. Read the guidelines before you submit.

Good luck.

In my case, I had read thrillers and romance novels with detailed sex scenes since my teenage years and written short stories since childhood. I first wrote fanfics in the late nineties. In early 2006, I was bored and decided to try writing erotic stories. My first inspiration came from the Vanity Fair cover Scarlett Johansson & Keira Knightley did that February. In the years since, I’ve picked up my keyboard whenever I’ve been in the right mood with the right inspiration. I’ve done fanfic and original work.

I was reading a story here on Lit and after a while realized the writing was dreadful. "I could do better that this!" I thought to myself. With 40 years of sexual fantasies in my brain I decided to give it a try. Three years and 46 stories ago now.

I've always been writing, since I was a kid. Always sci-fi. I actually wrote a sci-fi play in first grade that was performed.

I wote two novels and got an agent for one, but nothing came of it. I wrote some mainstream literature and got a few stories published in literary magazines. I did writing conferences and got lots of praise, but no contracts.

I gave up after a while. I'm good at science as well as sci-fi, and high tech pays much, much better. But I always had the itch.

During the pandemic I got the itch even stronger, maybe to compensate for my long distance lover that I was unable to connect with. So I started writing erotica. One thing led to another and here we are.

Erotica drew me, but I never answered the call. What I'm saying by this is that erotic elements were part of my work before I switched to erotica, but I never decided to write erotica because I was under the bad impression that 50 Shades of Gray and a lot of bad erotica left on me. I only wrote one story back in the early 10s that could be considered erotica, but that was it.

I had a bit of an identity crisis first because I always wanted to write, but didn't know what. I switched constantly between fantasy, urban fantasy, and crime, until I sat down seriously and went with Cyberpunk because it was the subject that drew me the most. That's how I started: with Cyberpunk. Eventually I branched out to Fantasy-Cyberpunk (Shadowrun, anyone?), Police Procedurals, and Neon-noir.

I started writing erotica for my ex-girlfriend at the time of 2019. Later on I started reading other eroticas aside from the bad erotica that I mentioned, and it's hard for me to see myself writing something other than this. Found Literotica a year later after writing, and she encouraged to publish some of my work here. Two series, which are now deleted, one because... I don't know. It has its charm, but I think I can do better. The other one because I had no idea how to carry it on. This has been my bane.

I suppose it started with my Centaur character, the joke being that I actually was, "hung like a horse."
From there it progressed to equine shape shifters, both mare and stallion. To end up with Anthropomorphic equine characters.

A long time ago I used to participate in quite a bit of adult online role playing. (I don't anymore, so don't anyone try to start one up with me.) And one of the friends I made while doing such stuff asked me while we were just chatting about random stuff, "Why do unicorns like virgins?" Well, that circled around in my head for a while until I wrote a story about it. He found the story funny and arousing and I found writing it to be at least as satisfying as role playing with others.

Shortly after I wrote that I got together with my SO, and moved on with my life and didn't really try to write anymore, although I would sometimes tell him the fantasies that ran through my head. Then several years later I realized that the babies had eaten too much of my brain and I really wanted to write them down before sharing them with him. So I took one of the ones that was too difficult for me to just talk about and started writing it down instead.

Honestly, I think the stories are better for having written them down then they ever were with just saying them.

When my husband and I started to live together he also was starting to work internationally a lot. So we’d spend weeks apart. I always had an ‘active’ mind, and I wanted to keep his mind focused if you know what I mean. So I’d write short passages with us as the participants.

Unicorns are fabulous characters to work with.

Well...In middle school....(yes, it started in middle school) I began writing my first book. It was a fantasy novel. I never finished sadly...I still have it...and I still claim that one day I will get back to it...but...we'll see. I had a passion for writing from a young age.

I was also a huge pervert. And living in a house of 7 (2 parents, 5 kids) with..*cough* *cough* dial up internet......looking at porn online was not an easy thing to get away with...you know what WAS easy to do? Find a few erotic stories that looked good, print them out real quick before anyone saw, and stick them under my bed to read later that night.

So, those two things combined led me to trying my hand (pun intended) at writing my own smut. Cause I had limited access to internet, and so I didn't always have time to browse for the perfect story...so the best option, was to write my own, so I could guarantee that my story matched my fantasy.

Fast forward a few years, and I found Literotica. It was a brand new site, but it was great. Stories...and decent ones to boot. And I was starting to get old enough that I could sneak onto the computer late enough in the night that I had more privacy, and more time to browse.

But I still had the itch. I joined the site (with a different account) in 2007 Posted several stories...they were ok, but not great. That account technically still exists, but all the stories have since been removed (by me)

My "start" with erotica came from purchasing e-books on Amazon. They were okay. But I had a hard time with the poor grammar and unimaginative story lines. Actually, the subjects weren't all bad, but the authors just weren't expressing it in a way that made it an enjoyable read for me.

Then I found Literotica. :nana:

While there are certainly authors here who struggle with grammar, word choice and implausible story lines, there are many here who write well and create fantastic stories that fully engage me. :)

I have wanted to write creatively for a long time, but I let life lead me elsewhere. Now I find I actually need the creative outlet. After reading many stories, including some of the articles in the "how to" section here, I dove in. Idea's were easy for me as I spend a lot of time fantasizing at night when I can't sleep. I'm not (yet?) one to sit down and write 10,000 words like some of the individuals here. I write in bits and pieces as I work on several different story concepts. So I spend a lot of time smoothing these cobbled pieces together. Perhaps it takes me longer, but its what works for me at this point in time.

Give yourself grace, hang out here in the AH and interact with the others. Folks here are friendly and helpful.

Not every story needs to be 10k words. Some stories that are, are just long winded...I am guilty of being long winded at times...sometimes I just get on a roll, and can't stop writing... There have been some absolutely amazing stories, ones that really got my motor running, that barely reached 4k words. If you know what you are doing, the subject matter is right, and you use the right words...that might be all you need.

On the other hand, if you are trying for more story, and not just straight smut...that's when the 10k and up starts to come in. :) My current WIP is currently at about 60k and rising. And I don't think I'm even a 1/3 of the way through yet. But I'm writing an Erotic Fantasy epic. so, it's not all just sex, it's fantasy, and story, and magic.

Don't worry so much about word count, worry about the story. Tell it, and tell it well. The words will come.
