How come watching brutal violence is okay for minors, but watching a sex show is not?

Well, not a porn sex show, but one that discusses human sexuality. Minors are allowed to go and view brutal violence in movies, TV or on the net, but such a wonderful site as LIT is closed to minors? Why is that?
 
well according to the POWERS at work sex is wrong , sinfull , sick and a whole bunch of other shizza , and the we wonder why kinds are getting knocked up at 15 , but violence ofcourse is ok , cuz it sells
 
I think it is a legal thing. i can't remember why but hey Ashcroft is in charge of all that so there is a good reason.

true - but can a 15-16 year old handle it? Im pretty sure they can.
 
vilolence may sell, but so does sex. as i see it it's still a reaction against our far too ingrained religious past. there were all sorts of rules and methods to scare people off sex. it's all in history and a violent history at that. that may not answer the question, but perhaps it brings a little perspective to the conversation.
 
Im sure the only reason that our history has taught sex as evil is probably because churches didnt like sex before marriage. After marriage im sure theres no problems.. I think Christianity teachers that sex before marriage is a sin.

Personally, I don't want to have sex if im not married.. I dont want to have sex with someone I dont love.. (and yes im male.. which makes it kinda freaky :D ). I think sex should be shared only with the one you absolutely love and will cherish for the rest of your life... but im rambling now lol

Seriously though, restricting access to sexual materials just has a much longer history than restricted access to violence does. There are people who are trying very hard to limit children's entertainment to Sesame Street and the Care Bears -- and they're not all too fond of Sesame Street because Bert and Ernie just might possibly grow up to be gay.
 
Europe is the exact opposite of the US on these terms.

They are much more free on a sexual basis then we are and constrict violence much more.

no big message, no multi-layered plot.
Do you really want your children to be exposed to the kindergarten version of "Dawson's Creek" ?
 
Voilence is very educational, while sex is just fun. We don't want our kids to have too much fun now, do we?

Some parents blame society but society isn't living in thier house. I believe the blame is being avoided. The blame is staring them back in the mirror. Parental Supervision and mentoring is what seperates violence and sex into acceptable catagories. Killing for food is ok, killing for fun isn't. Having sex responsibly is ok,violating someone with sex as a weapon isn't.

No, it's not bad that children's entertainment is "harmless." What's bad is that it's boring and often not even entertaining for children.

Re: "no big message, no multi-layered plot" -- You don't watch much Sesame Street, do you? It's one of the most multi-layered programs you'll ever see -- that's why it's lasted for so long. Parents can stand have it on and actually enjoy watching it with their kids.

Care Bears, on the other hand was, (still is in syndication,) one of the most boring and bland shows I ever tried to watch.

Both of my children are adults, so they can watch whatever they want. I don't think either of them are fans of Dawson's Creek -- I know I've never watched it. I have no idea what a "kindergarten version" would be like.

I do have two grandchildren, and enjoyed watching Shrek with them -- a movie many would say was unsuitable for young children because there's some sexual innuendo in it.
 
Ya know, back when I was a kid we didn't sit around wishing there was some smut mixed in to our 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 pinball machine song. We just had our tv fun and after CHiPs was over, we'd go out to the fort and learn about sex in more directly active ways than watching it on tv.

It is legal to own/sell a gun in these states (I believe).
 
Yes go ahead and show a man rape, torture and kill a woman that's ok. But show a man having sex or making love to a woman, the world falls apart. Maybe that's why we are closer to self-annihilation than having a peaceful hedonistic society.
 
I have to say that violence is worse than an orgasm. The way violence is mixed with sex is even worse. I cannot imagine what would be wrong with letting kids see nudity. I mean they do all the time when they look in the mirror or play doctor. They aren't little adults but a little complexity in their stories couldn't hurt them.

Given the conditions that a lot of kids grow up in they already see a lot of sex and violence so maybe it would be a good idea to have shows that help them understand whats up. I wish I'd had those shows.
 
My brother watched the South Park Movie. If you ask him what the moral is, he'll tell you that it's that saying bad words isn't as bad as war and death. Kids will get some pretty deep shit if you try.

This is the human condition.
there is this compulsion to destroy eh? it's much easier and more satisfying shortly.

I don't think that a peaceful hedonistic society, I.E, a utopia
is really possible.
