How can the poor afford cigarettes if the government keep raising taxes?

New Jersey just went up 70 cents a pack. It's not like anyone who smokes really wants to. When a two smoker family's habit reaches 30 dollars a day, can you really blame them if they turn to crime? Is it right for their kids to go hungry when the tobacco bill is over 200 dollars a week?

The Democrats will propose subsidies for low-income smokers...

The press will report than Republicans don't want the poor to smoke...

Glad I don't buy my smokes at a store..******* is the way to go.

How much is a packet of tabs in the US now.

At current exchange rates a packet of your best cancer sticks is $6.75 in UK

Bargain

If we cut the price down to $1.00 a pack and encourage smoking we'd have a lot fewer people living long enough to collect social security. Those that want to live longer could just turn the smokes down.

they don't kill people fast enough for that to be effective. add more toxins first, then lower the price.

The poor can sue the tobacco companies before they die and become the rich. Too bad the democrats reinstated the estate tax. Government wins again.

one small issue with both theories....someone would freakin sue cause "my habit caused this lung disease" leading to massive regulation, pirce hikes and more sin taxes..its a vicious cycle.

btw, wtf ever happend to personal responsibility for ones own actions???

The theory is that they can't afford to smoke so they will quit - classic sin tax. We already have people smuggling cigarettes, including ones with fake tax stamps, and there have even been hijackings of trucks carrying cigs and violence. If ever there was a good example that such tactics don't work (as with the "War on Drugs") it is how cigs are taxed.

Unfortunately its US who pay for the multi-billion $$ hospital bills that smokers rack up. Whether they use Medicare and it comes from our taxes or they use insurance and we end up paying more for ours.

Why don't we just ban nicotine from cigarettes...no one would wnat to smoke them anymore.

The joke is though that the tax the UK smokers pay is huge per annum - and if the UK stopped smoking there would be a massive shortfall in the budget, - also smokers do die early so in a way we take pressure of health service and also pension funds.

I think goverment should definatley give us more encouragment to smoke more - as we are a valuable part of the fiscal cake .

All non smokers should personaly thank us for doing our part for the economy .

You can all PM me your thanks and words of gratitude

I say

Free "Butts" to the poor. It can be a new "Dem" slogan. A pack of Butts in every pocket. Just think A Camel revival. I'd caugh a month for a camel.

Holy Shit.

I just payed $23.00 for a carton of Winstons. It'll last my husband and I a little over a week. They're still cheaper than therapy or antidepressants.
