How can I tell if I was one bombed?

My Valentine's story started out well. All five stars. Then down to 4.11. Now 4.0. Only 23 votes. I did notice one mistake. Left the "s" off of a word, and it's short. But it has gained me new followers and has been favorited, so this leaves me wondering.

Don't fret much about it. You can't really determine exactly what votes were cast unless you're constantly watching it in nearly real time. Even then you only have varying degrees of certainty that decrease with the total number of votes.

Contest sweeps are the deepest, most bone-cutting of all. Very few of the bomb votes survive. By the time its all said and done, that vote will probably be a distant memory.

Unless you end up on a toplist after the contest, at which point you get to enjoy that never ending yo-yo ride of bomb, sweep, bomb, sweep until you drop down out of the "threat" range of the rabid fanbases LOL

I know that the first vote on my Valentine's contest story was a '2' which showed up 3 minutes after the story posted. Not quite a 1 bomb, but close.

But I only noticed that because I was checking to see if the story had posted. I can't complain - there have been enough votes since that the score has stabilized respectably up in red-H territory. I don't know where it will settle out, but so far it's been the best-received story I've posted.

What surprised me the most about contest stories is that there's a much higher ratio of votes to downloads - I've been getting about one vote for every 20 downloads, which is a *lot* more than I've seen on my non-contest posts.

And I'll bet a whole bunch of those votes will disappear when the first sweep goes through and your score will jump up a lot. My little contest entry also has an abnormal View/Vote ratio and a sub-par score, and my guess is Mister Trollie Troll and his lame ass buddies have been busy.

Wow! That's great! Mine is still at a solid 4.

Ah, thanks. Clearly I have a troll based on the comments of some past stories.

It's a downside of contest stories, unfortunately. Some writers seem to get targeted more than others, and there are some fairly predictable "out of the gate" attack tactics. Once sweeps start, you'll see your story's score move all over the place. Don't worry about it.

How can I tell if I was one bombed?

Look for the black, brown, blue, and green smoke that smells like bullshit.

I can remember a time here when sweeps were not needed or done.

Everyone gets trolled, it is a fact of life here.

If you want to watch carpet bombing, just watch when one of my competition stories goes live. Berlin 1945 has nothing on it. I live for the thrill. I have to say, it’s gotta be so frustrating for those trolls to watch their efforts come to naught. Alas, I cannot weep with them, unless I laugh so hard I cry. What’s worse is, they work so hard to keep my stories out of the hall of fame top 20, fail, and then I do it to myself by bumping one of my own stories out. That’s gotta suck if you’re a committed troll.

Treat it all as additional entertainment. We write. Trolls suck dead dingo dick 🙀

This contest seems to be an especially brutal one in regard to down-voting. I relate to what TxRad said about the days when trolling wasn't even a topic of discussion.

The dearth of comments seems to be getting worse too. I'm suspecting the reason for this is the use of cell phones and the subsequent difficulty of writing for those hooked on texting

Contests are like bouncy castles at the fun-fair, where all of the responsible adults stand watching whilst the kiddies bounce all over the place. Trolls are like the unfortunate kid with no friends who wants to join in, but is clueless how to be nice.

I hate to write this (especially because it could make me a target), but in this, my first time entering a contest, everything has gone pretty well so far. I’ve had my most-ever views, votes, favorites, and comments (all positive as of now), plus some new followers. I should take advantage of this and get some more stories out there to this expanded audience, but of course I’m now in a writer’s block.

Chloe, you’re too kind. Trolls are the spavined offspring of a poxy whore who pleasured herself with dead dingo dick, and sad disappointment to their parents.

My contest scores, post-sweep, are lower than my scores for comparable stories, but I get to pitch stories to some who wouldn't read them otherwise.

Interesting that the greater use of phones may reduce comments.

I’ll be whining soon, so be warned. First, though, I want to state that my earlier post in this thread remains true in its essence: That my experience in the Valentine’s Day contest has been good overall, with the stories getting many favorites, positive comments, and the addition of new followers. This is the kind of feedback that encourages me to write more for Lit, because many readers are receptive to what I dream up.

In that earlier post, I also worried that by expressing my sunny attitude, I’d make myself a target for those who enjoy killing a buzz. It now appears that this may have happened.

I watch the accumulation of votes on my stories, and on a few occasions I’ve seen low votes removed. On the whole, however, it seems that most voting on my stuff is legit, and when there are many votes, the main driver of the score is regression to the mean. As awareness of a story drifts past the readers who have an immediate interest in it, the wider audience is likely to be less enthusiastic, and less prone to giving high votes.

But...a few hours after I posted to this thread, my only story with a red H picked up a 2*, taking it below 4.5. At least one of the contest stories also took a dip that seems excessive given the number of votes it has. A few days earlier, all five parts of a series that I posted last year got 3*s, in an amount of time that seemed too short for someone to have read the whole series. (The former red H is the fourth part of this series.)

Lest I jump the rails completely, I have been aware since the second day of the contest that neither of my stories is in contention to win, so any downvoting has nothing to do with that. I try to keep my paranoia reasonable.

I am left to hope that these low votes will be purged eventually. Meanwhile, I am working on new content for Lit. I had stated in the earlier post that I was in a writer’s block, but a few hours later I made some headway on two partially-written stories. I did this before I even knew about the 2* vote.

Also, I have an entry in the 750-word event, which will surely get at least 4.9. Reasonable paranoia does not mean a firm grasp on all of reality.

I don't think its just the contests. I think the trolls have been cloned. I posted a story yesterday Visit to the Lodge https://www.literotica.com/beta/s/visit-to-the-lodge Started out well received. Then i clearly got some 1 bombs because I was checking hourly as I had a theory, which is there is a cluster of 1 bombers in the Eastern US time zone who apparently don't have a life, because my last 4 stories started strong took a big drop later that day, (early morning US Eastern zone) and then gradually recovers.

I wrote the story with a twist that I was hoping would get come comments. Not so far.

Trolls happen, and sadly unless there was a requirement to post a comment in your own name along with a rating (which I oppose as I suspect people would quit rating if they had to do a comment too) noting is going to change.

Hmmm

I love conspiracy theories - so here goes. My initial reaction to posts like this is, 'Must have pissed off the LW crew.' But I looked you up and couldn't discern any evidence that those particular haters would single you out.

Next theory - maybe it's just someone with an overinflated sense of their own worth. But I read your entry - couldn't find the misplaced 's', so obviously not too closely. I thought it was good. Gotta be worth somewhere between a 4 and a 5 (I hope my five-stars offsets some of the earlier damage. To be honest I'd probably have gone 4 if I'd read it blind, but we're all friends here, right?)

Current dark thoughts. Could it be that some of the more competitive entrants are sticking it to the rest to try and boost their own chances? I only ever entered one competition. I had a lot of fun writing it and think it's one of the best things I've written here. I was proud of it and got the best piece of feedback I've ever had. Marks-wise it was slaughtered. I don't think I'd written anything that hadn't scored over four up to then, but this was in the low three's from the get go. It's risen significantly in the intervening years, but it put me off the whole competition thing.

Final thought. Would it be an idea not to post the running totals on competition entries until the closing date? I think high/low marks do influence others. Whenever I read a new author I tend to go for their best received story first. Sometimes they're really rubbish, whilst others by the same person are great. I'm going to look at the Valentine competition stuff after your post, but I doubt I'll spend much time on the lowest scored stories however much I want to be fair.

Good Luck.

If you are willing to do the math, this article provides some useful information about how to calculate the number of 1 votes you have (within a range) provided you have certain data available to you.

If you look at that article Simon refers to it was posted back in 2012 (8 years ago) in which he mentions the dreaded one bombers.

Hint For Everyone: They've been around forever and what you can't change isn't worth worrying about.
