How can I say good-bye?

I was just a fledgling writer, testing her wings, when he smiled in my direction. He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. He held a mirror in front of me and said, “Look, see what you have to offer and reach for it.”

My work needed help. He gave it with a grin and a joke. Even though his life was riddled with pain, he found joy in the task before him. Through his humor and his kindness, and his adorable flirtations, he became my friend.

When I was down, he lifted me. When I was lazy, he nudged me. When I wanted to give up, he laughed at me and told me to get my act together.

How does one say good-bye to one’s inspiration and one’s rock in the storm? Rest in peace, my friend. Your pain is at an end. Enjoy your peace and know that you made our world a better place.

R.I.P. Ed (Techsan), Friend, Editor, Confidant. You are missed.

No one could ask for a more heart-felt elegy, Molly. Beautiful, just beautiful.

I didn't know him at all but I am saddened by his loss.

That was beautiful, Molly.

My condolences Molly. It's difficult to lose a loved one...or a friend.

I cannot say and I will not say
That he is dead, he is just...away
With a cheery smile and a wave of his hand
He wandered into a different land
O' it must be wondrous fair
He does not return, but tarries there
He is free of fear and pain
and 'ere one day we shall meet again
So I cannot say and I will not say
That he is dead, he is just...away.

Anon.

Last August, my family lost Josh, my oldest nephew. A thread was kindly started by DK to offer me support. Ed left the following message, which shows the kind of man he was:

Molly, I can't tell you how sad it makes me feel to hear about your loss. To have one so young taken from your family has to be devastating but I'll bet you also have memories of good times with him, fun things that happened along his short life. I hope you'll keep those in mind, even as you mourn his passing. No way do you deserve to have this stacked on top of the issues that have already been heaped on you and your family but we'll be praying that better things are just around the corner for you and your family. Remember the good ways that Joshua touched your family.

Love you, sweet lady,
Techsan

The loss of his kindness is the cruelest fate of all.

He is the one who contacted me and said, "Your stories are OK but they could be good if you had them edited correctly." He took me under his wing and patiently worked with me. He would get aggravated when I would make the same mistakes over and over again, but would always end with words of encouragement.

He is the only author/editor I have ever met. I went up to Mich. to visit relatives and met Ed in a restaurant and bought him lunch. He was an extremely intelligent man.

I have gained a lot just by knowing him. I will miss him. Clayton Edward Raney, you will be missed.

:rose: and *hugs* for all who need.

The passing of a kind person always hurts many hearts.

Yeah, he will be sorely missed.:( Yesterday I was in shock, getting up this morning I hoped it was all a dream, unfortunately the nightmare didn't fade away with the first light.

You were a good writer, a fine editor, my co-conspirator on so many stories, but most of all, you were my friend and the hole you left in my heart will never be filled.

I miss you, Clayton.:rose:

Very nicely said, LadyC. He had the upmost respect for you. I know the three of us had a difference of opinion many times but I can't count the times he told me to see what LadyC had to say. We lost a good friend and a great editor as well as a good author in his own right. :rose:

I really didn't know Techsan, but the eloquence with which you are all remembering him strikes me as something any editor would appreciate.

Remember the skills he helped you develop... use them in your work and in your lives and you will grant him a kind of immortality.

Thank you! He was a very sincere man. He was named editor of the year for 2007 and was very well deserving of it.
