Confirming that the TransAtlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) amounts to "a huge transfer of power from people to big business," Greenpeace Netherlands on Monday leaked 248 secret pages of the controversial trade deal between the U.S. and EU, exposing how environmental regulations, climate protections, and consumer rights are being "bartered away behind closed doors."

The documents represent roughly two-thirds of the latest negotiating text, according to Greenpeace, and on some topics offer for the first time the position of the United States.

Before Monday, elected representatives were only able to view such documents under guard, in a secure room, without access to expert consultation, while being forbidden from discussing the content with anyone else. This secrecy runs "counter to the democratic principles of both the EU and the U.S.," the website ttip-leaks.org declares.

Oh hey! You know how we’ve been fighting for quite a while to get the minimum wage up to $15 an hour? And all the Republicans have been opposed to that, and just WEEPING for how horrible that would be for the poor job creators? Well, it turns out that even that may not even be enough to cover rent these days! Fun!

According to a new report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition, in order to afford a one bedroom apartment at the average fair market rate, without going over 30 percent of one’s income, a person would have to be making about $16.35 an hour. A single parent with a child (29% of all minimum wage workers) who needs a two bedroom would need to earn $20.30 an hour.

Here is a charming graphic showing how many hours a person working at the current minimum wage would need to work in order to afford an average one-bedroom apartment in each state in the US of America!

They are still fucking us at $15 and hour, just not as hard yet!

There are street demonstrations against TTIP in both Germany and France. It now looks like France will refuse to accept it, so the whole deal is scuppered.

Under the deal Donald Trump would have been able to pay his workers in Scotland the UK minimum wage while implementing US employment protection rights. The French 35 hour week would only apply to European companies. US companies would be able to have a sixty hour week if they so desired. Any disputes would be settled by a secret court where judgements are made not by the judiciary but by business people. There would be no appeal and the judgements would be legally binding.

A lot has been said about how much the EU and the US would gain from this agreement but we all know that where somebody gains someone else loses. In this case, the losers would be the workers on both sides of the Atlantic. The winners will be the multinational corporations who will effectively be writing corporate law.

In the Sanders/Clinton battle for the presidential nomination, Elizabeth Warren stayed on the perimeter. She wasn’t quiet, that’s for sure. But she was the only woman in the Senate not to endorse Hillary, no doubt frustrating many women. She didn’t endorse Bernie, either, making many in the Bern crowd angry. She was threading the needle, as few can do.
Warren has now embraced Hillary, which seems appropriate, and is campaigning aggressively with her. This is accompanied by considerable speculation about whether Hillary has the vision, and perhaps the chutzpah, to step out of her cautiousness and tap Warren to be her vice-president. And Warren has been the chief Twitter thorn in Trump’s side—an important job these days.
But beyond the presidential maneuvering, Warren is articulating a brilliant (if not obvious) critique of what ails our economy, and it is not just the banks. As Paul Glastris wrote in the Washington Monthly, Warren has:

“…. extended her critique to the entire economy, noting that, as a result of three decades of weakened federal antitrust regulation, virtually every industrial sector today—from airlines to telecom to agriculture to retail to social media—is under the control of a handful of oligopolistic corporations. This widespread consolidation is ‘hiding in plain sight all across the American economy,’ she said, and ‘threatens our markets, threatens our economy, and threatens our democracy.'”

These are the issues that need to be discussed, not fucking e-mails and stars.
