KIEV, Ukraine — A month before Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, one of his closest allies in Congress — House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy — made a politically explosive assertion in a private conversation on Capitol Hill with his fellow GOP leaders: that Trump could be the beneficiary of payments from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) said, according to a recording of the June 15, 2016, exchange, which was listened to and verified by The Washington Post. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is a Californian Republican known in Congress as a fervent defender of Putin and Russia.

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) immediately interjected, stopping the conversation from further exploring McCarthy’s assertion, and swore the Republicans present to secrecy.

It's the WaPO.

They told us Comey asked for more money. Not true.

They told us that the Rosen*-guy (don't recall the name at the moment) threatened to quit if Comey wasn't fired. Also a falsehood.

They told us Trump illegally leaked state secrets (via anonymous source) to Russia, This was denied by everyone present.

Bezos owns the WaPO and is clearly trying to turn it into the National Enquirer sans aliens and Bigfoot sightings.

So please forgive me if a take this with a grain of salt...

We find out about Comey's February memo in May after he's fired.

We find out about McCarthy's June 2016 "Putin pays Trump" comment after Mueller is appointed special counsel in May.

We find out McConnell wants Garland as new FBI director.

What's next?

Weaksauce "but...but...Fake News!" shoot-teh-messenger deflection, even for you.

Maybe you should go back to outsourcing your deflections to your "off-board bro" Conager and stick to hiding behind American Thinker op-eds.

Putin's been buying Trump Steaks for years...the whole thing's just a syntax/context boo-boo.

If you read the full text of the full source, there is no evidence of anything.

Yes he did say it. Does he have any proof? No.

It means nothing.

There are Republicans as well as Democrats who want to destroy Trump. They all want revenge. In the case of the Republicans, they think they can control Pence whereas the Democrats will immediately try to destroy him also for pure political gain.

After being told that The Post would cite a recording of the exchange, Buck, speaking for the GOP House leadership, said: “This entire year-old exchange was clearly an attempt at humor. No one believed the majority leader was seriously asserting that Donald Trump or any of our members were being paid by the Russians. What’s more, the speaker and leadership team have repeatedly spoken out against Russia’s interference in our election, and the House continues to investigate that activity.”

“This was a failed attempt at humor,” Sparks said.

What's next?

60 million Americans invading DC to hang a few citizens.:D

Is that why Ryan "swore his colleagues to secrecy?"

It was probably regarding the meeting and not the joke...

Remember, the WaPo is enjoying its increased sales with every piece of fake news it publishes; it is in a battle for its life.

Do you think Pence will be a president for ALL Americans?

I don't know what the establishment will allow him to do as they draw us closer and closer to civil war. The action being taken now is against the American majority, not Trump. They have made a calculation that they can get away with throwing out the election on the basis of lies. If we thought people were fed up with the swamp before the election, I don't think we've seen the true extent of what can happen when you politically disenfranchise 60 million members of the American majority.

Will Pence have the support he needs from Ryan & McConnell that Trump hasn't received?

Hilarious:

Reporter: "So here's what your boss supposedly said when Kevin McCarthy accused Trump of being on the Russian payroll..."

Ryan's spokesman: "LIES! It never happened!"

Reporter: "Well, actually it's on tape, and we've heard the tape, and your boss is on the tape."

Ryan's spokesman: "[gulp] Oh! Um .... he was kidding!"

I don't think so, Tristyn. He waged an 8-year social and legal war against the core values of the American majority.

What majority are you talking about? Obama won the electoral and popular votes both times.

So what. That doesn't mean he didn't do exactly what I said he did. He's the reason why Trump exists and the Democrat Party has been marginalized into a coastal archipelago of urban support.

What you are thinking of are no longer the values of the American majority, if ever they were.

No, the Republican Party has been marginalized into an irrelevant rural hinterland. The coastal (and more than coastal, there are quite a lot of blue patches in the Great Flyover) archipelago is where everything worthwhile happens.
