With a joyful leap and a resounding bellow, Jack gave into the chase. His heart was pumping so fast! He leaped over a log lying in his path and kept after his prey. Kill! He would show alpha male! He was the best hunter the pack had ever known. Things were going his way lately and if he kept up with what he had been doing lately, he might even replace alpha male! The thought of becoming the leader of the pack excited him beyond belief and a new burst of strength almost doubled his stride. Jack was in his zone, doing what he lived for. The raccoon he was chasing was a wily old cuss but Jack could see through all of his tricks. This wasn’t Jack’s first hunt or chase and he was determined to beat the pack.

Behind him and almost out of hearing, Jack heard The Man yell, “Get ‘im boys! Whoooooweeeeee!” The yell spurred Jack yet again and the adrenaline and the thrill of the chase had his tongue lolling to one side of his face and it felt good. The raccoon went to tree and Jack was on him lightning fast. He started baying the signal that let the others know that the coon was his. Jack circled the tree baying as loud as he could, knowing in his heart that this would win him the coveted alpha male position in the pack. That meant the choicest meats and crunchies would be his; that meant that the best blanket would be his, along with the best place to lie in the sun! Jack was so caught up in the moment he didn’t see nor realize that the raccoon had jumped from a branch in one tree to another and was currently making his way toward the river.

The pack arrived at this time and set up shop around the tree Jack indicated. The alpha male, Rosie, took over the lead treeing position and brayed like a donkey. Rosie’s voice had seen better days. The Man arrived with his portable sunbeam and shone the sunlight into the tree, temporarily blinding the pack, which set off another round of barking and baying. The Man searched and searched the tree and to his disappointment and Jack’s dismay, the raccoon was not to be found. Jack sat down on his haunches and tried to catch his breath. He couldn’t believe it! The raccoon must have been a spirit or something! There was no way the raccoon could have gotten away! It was RIGHT here! Rosie looked at Jack and his tail went up. Jack had made the entire pack lose face and a night's sleep.

Rosie came up to Jack and Jack immediately cowed, all thoughts of becoming the alpha male long forgotten. Rosie cuffed Jack pretty hard, drawing blood from Jack’s neck. Jack yelped and rolled to his back, his neck exposed to show submission. He never saw Yellow coming as he bit Jack on his haunches. The pain hurt so bad and Jack yelped once again. Yellow attacked again, looking to increase his standings in the pack. Jack cried a bitter, painful cry as Yellow bit and nipped him again and again. Rosie barked once and the attack ended. Yellow, panting with the exertion stood next to Rosie and looked down at Jack with glee. Jack had just lost his spot in the pack. It meant several days of fighting and challenging to reestablish who stood where in the pack. Rosie and Yellow turned to leave as The Man whistled for the pack to head home. Jack waited until everyone had left before standing. He limped his way back to the trail he had followed in, his nose working overtime to se if he could catch an insight to what went wrong.

The Man looked the tree over one more time. Nothing was there. He leaned down and caught Jack by surprise, which made him yelp once again. “Next time Jack. You’ll get him next time.” The Man scratched his ear and Jack wagged his tail in appreciation. At least EVERYONE wasn’t mad at him. The two of them walked off as The Man wondered to himself how Jack would take to moving into the house.

What crap! There is no way a dog with the name Rosie could be pack leader. That's a sissy girls name. Better luck next time.

:p
