I screamed down the desert highway. The engine droned tirelessly, almost eagerly. It was a cool California evening, yet the convertible top was down. Wind blew though my blonde hair and tore at my shirtsleeves. The smell of smoke, warm colitas, once clinging to my person now rose up with the wind. I rested my wrist atop the wheel; the other casually lay across the shift.
Miles yet to go, the sleek red car leapt along the darkened road. Up ahead in the distance could be seen a light shimmering. It was late, my head grew weary, and my sight began to dim. Was it the drugs? Or, was it just the late hour? I never could tell. I must stop, if only for the night. I must stop the drugs, if only for my life, I mused.

I slowed. What was this, a hotel? A few lights were lit, it looked quiet, soothing. Down shifting the engine whined, protested and then complied. Gravel flew and screeched as I tore into the entranceway. There a woman stood in the doorway, beautiful and inviting. I stopped in front of the entrance and got out running fingers through my hair. The woman rang a bell. I wondered, thinking this woman could be my heaven or she could prove to be my hell. Her eyes shone with intelligence, a confidence. She was alluring.
The woman lit a candle and showed me a way in. Down the dim hallway I heard voices, singing, “Welcome. Such a lovely place.” There was a bar with a tender, a couple patrons. Soft lights lit the room, rich stained wood was everywhere. Comfortable chairs lined the bar, lush couches sat at each end of the room. A few tables were scattered, chairs up ended atop them. There were two other exits, one obviously led out to a kitchen, the other maybe to more rooms?
The woman left me with a promise to return.
