I recently was listening to this song and found myself fanaticizing about the "trapped" occupants of the hotel.

The line about the girl and her pretty boys caught my ear. How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat. This may be a song about the entrapment of a folk rock group into the Californian drug scene of the 70's (or how ever you may interpret it), but it does seem to have some very clear erotic overtones in it.

Maybe it warrants investigating the more sensual aspects of some of the meanings of the song? It's something I've been pondering, but as of yet have actually completed any of my writings...erotic or otherwise...so don't hold your breath to see me publish on Lit anytime soon. XD

maybe as a non-human or fantasy story about ghosts trapped in a deserted hotel?

the Lyrics:
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
’this could be heaven or this could be hell’
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the hotel california
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the hotel california
Any time of year, you can find it here

Her mind is tiffany-twisted, she got the mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the captain,
’please bring me my wine’
He said, ’we haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine’
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the hotel california
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the hotel california
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said ’we are all just prisoners here, of our own device’
And in the master’s chambers,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
’relax,’ said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
But you can never leave!

If you want you can always start an aurgument About the song, the main thing that made this song so very populer was the fact that it had So many under meanings inside itself. the True meaning never really making too much sense to the unappeased populace as they yearned for 'better' answers.

The Best rumors about this song is:
1- the song is about an Occult (devil worshippers) that lured innocent people through drugs riches and women only to use them to be sacrifices to their demon lords.
2- the song is about the usage of Drugs and the path of addiciton
3- the song is about an Insane asylum near LA and explains the feelings that one gets from slowly going insane from being inside a psychward (dancing in the courtyard, some dance to remember some dance to forget would be the some Act out to remember what it is like to be normal, some act out in order to forget that they are insane.) also the 'we are all prisoners here of our own device' would fit into this theroy well because they are all priosners (locked up) because of their own insane actions.

Now the Truth (although not really belived by many) is that the song is About the Bands personal 'riding high' during the boom of their song, the no where band hits 1 hit and they are instantly thrown into a world of Getting what ever they want (tiffany twisted, mercades benz) and anything they wanted (smell of colitas, colitas is another word for weed.) and not being able to escape the monster of a song or world they created ('stab it with their steely knives, but cant kill the beast' and 'you can check out any time you want, but you can never leave') even with the 'we are all prisioners here of our own device' line would mean, we are only prisioners of our own success.

The aurguments about this song go on an on as people wonder what they Really ment by the lyrics they wrote. even though they came out and already said what they really ment, most dont accept it.

is there a particular one you would do a fantasy ' groupie' story about?

Hmmmmmm...

I think this idea has some real merit, at least at first glance :D

Don't know about taking the lyrics literally thou, but the 'haunted hotel' angle does sound intriguing, if done correctly it might work out pretty swell! I might let it fester on the backburner a little bit, while the laptop's still down n out. But I'm likin the CONCEPT of a Hotel California-esque lit-story, at least, for the moment anyhowz ;)

I've never been one for a 'groupie'; but thinking about it (i've had a few aggressive males email me) maybe something where groupies are following me around.....

The movie "Almost Famous" It's based on an Eagle's tour.
I wuz there, folks. I haunted the Whisky-A-Go-Go and the Riot House.. long hair and tight jeans and embroidering for English rockers.
My sister called me and said- "don't see that movie in public, you'll be crying all the way through it" and she was right. Those were really innocent times, and I never got hurt.

Seems like a million years ago, now.

oops, red face.... can I pretend I haven't had enough coffee? I was typing under the influence of nostalgia instead of brains?
yeah, and I am pretty sure (disclaimers all the time, now) that "I AM A GOLDEN GOD!!!" quote- was Robert Plant.
They were all like that, though, really, they were.

Plant said, sometime in the nineties, that he felt so sorry for the modern bands. he said-
"It used to be; Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll. Now it's Safe, Sober, and Rock and Roll..."
Anyway, "Almost Famous" will give you a real taste of what it was like, and I am thinking about "Hotel California" now as a theme.

I agree "Almost Famous" is a great movie.

Do you think "Hotel California" could be a chain story?
Different happenings in the different rooms of the hotel...
the rooms could be actual or metaphorical.

... wasnt that a movie in and of it self?

but that would be intresting. could do it many ways too. voyer-esk type, the owner looking through peep holes at the many encounters that happen in a sleezy motel. the adventures of a bell hop, or bell hops, in a clazzy ritzy high rise hotel with extra peversion. i could see a: rich couple order a bottle of fine wine, and the bellhop/room service joins for a drink, and a shag. or mad orgy happens in a room as they leave the doors wide open, roomservice walks in unaware of the hot sex, and gets pulled into the action.

or you could even make it a 1 person who is a regular just traveling the rooms in this highclass hotel as diffrent rooms hold diffrent 'functions' and 'meetings' and talk about how she does go from room to room.

I have a story in editing with a long intense bellhop + maid scene.

Hmm... this is sounding like a really good idea!
I have a non-consent story bubbling up in my brain...
Are we going to do this? huh? huh?!
*rubs hands*
