So, I know what the red H means, a story is Hot.
What does the E & the others mean? I'm assuming Excellent.

W means a story has won a contest, either first, second or third place.

E means Editor's choice, which I guess means that it struck a chord with Laurel.

"E" actually stands for "Everybody". As in every person that read this story agreed it was a masterpiece not to be missed.

I kid.

But seriously....

Personally, I've always wanted to get the green "E" more than anything: not as universal as an "H" or as hard-earned as a contest winner, but somehow more rarified, more sporadically distinguishing. I know it is only the opinion of one person, but it is almost like getting a stamp of approval from God. AMoveableBeast, writer of smut, singer of songs, bearer of the sacred E.

Ah well, I can dream.

The Red H can be a target for 1 bombs.

The Blue W certainly is. Winners' ratings can drop significantly shortly after the announcement of the end of the contest. A few years ago, a third place story might have also won the Authors' Hangout Last Place (tm) Contest within 48 hours of acquiring the W.

The Green E for Editor's Choice is rare but has struck a chord with one person - Laurel. It can also attract green jealousy! (My E has never had an H.)

To receive an "E" would be a proud accomplishment for me as well. Alas, I hold my breath not. For now I'll have to be content with the comments of anonymous critics who declare my writing to be "dumb, dumb, and dumber."

You need to write more to increase your chance of gaining an "E".

I have one "E" in 206 stories and 11 poems, but you have 75% H in your list - a much higher percentage than I have.

Edited to change to the correct number of my stories - senility approaching.

And then there are 20+ jeanne_d_artois stories...

I was recommending something like the 'E', but decided by all authors. The 'E' is a great idea.
Some of the stories I like the best, written by myself and others are not rated well, but have struck a chord with me. Not every taste is universal. Yes there are haters, but god bless them for there time and effort. I have pride in my family and long career, My Literotica works are not my end all and be all.

I was thinking I could just be like Harper Lee. You know, just write one smashingly good thing and get all the awards and accolades out of the way at one time. It saves on gas, I think. What with having to attend ceremonies and give speeches and whatnot. That's a lot of driving. And at these prices....

Yeah, I'm thinking just one really good one. Maybe even make it a musical, and make it long enough to adapt as a TV show but short enough for a movie. I've always fancied that huge EGOT necklace. I have a bit of a lazy eye, and I think it'd help distract from that.

Yeah, that sounds like a plan. I'll make a note...

My E's had H's for a while then they started to disappear. Some still do, but not all, as in the beginning.

God gave me a choice: "I can bless thee to achieve consistently high ratings on Literotica or become a fantastic lover..."

Laurel has to process through all of the stories submitted. I'll take the Green E as the ultimate compliment here. It's the only one that can't be manipulated by the users regardless of story quality.

Of course it would be nicer if there were several editors so that varied tastes could be represented.

It would be 100%, but some people just have no appreciation for the subtle humor of anal pegging. Oh well, you can't please everybody.

I take your point, however. I'm not a prolific writer. Time and inspiration are in short supply. I'm working on starting fewer stories and finishing more. That should help.

My favorite LIT writer, Daphne DeWitt, had a total of seven stories posted here before she disappeared. She had no red H's and three Green E's. Her stories were concise, (2 to 3 pages) skillfully written, with clever twist endings involving an unexpected revelation for one of the characters. Usually it was the guy getting his ass handed to him by a woman who wouldn't put up with his BS.

That was why no red H's. There are so many anonymous macho men who feel threatened by stories which feature strong women.

That's a very good point.

The "E" reflecting whatever the "flavor of the month" is for the one editor is a little unfair because let's face it, whatever categories they have no liking for will never receive one no matter how well written.

You'd think. But she's given them to my stories in six widely divergent categories, so her taste doesn't seem to be limited much.
