hi, i looked for a guide on this but didn't find anything to answer my question. what are the rules for horror stories? by name, one would think blood and guts is ok....but something along the lines of hostel? i'm not sure where the line is for literotica...granted, most of the stories here have an erotic theme.

so, how far can a horror story go before rejection?

thanks
Jen

My understanding is that the basic limits are no sex for under 18s and it is not allowed to kill someone for sexual gratification. However I think the latter rule has been broken in Erotic Horror.

The best way to see what is allowed is to look at several stories in the Top List for Erotic Horror.

thanks, i'm checking some of them out now....i do have a horror story, not really an erotic horror story. the opening of the story is based on real life, but the ending is something that i want to have happen to this man (he's a local attorney - real scum bag). funny how real life can create fiction!

Writing for revenge or to exorcise your own demons is popular and effective.

Just make sure the person you are writing about isn't identifiable - otherwise he might sue you... ;)

i think as long as you avoid lust murders of kids*, and slicing or dicing them, you will be OK.

*and their sexual activities generally

Not sure, but I suspect necrophilia might be a no-no.

Of course, that depends on the situation.

Banging a vampire is OK. I should know. ;)

Banging a zombie is iffy.

Banging a corpse, very doubtful.

Just my $0.03 worth. (Inflation, it's such a pain)

Any suggestion of snuff will be rejected, I'm sure, as will most overtly violence-glorifying scenarios, as happens with Non-Consent.

Campy gore and psychological horror should be fine. Think scary movies, but not the illegal underground stuff. ;)

Jenn:

I've got the same issues with one of my Halloween pieces- it's got death and mayhem in it, but a strong erotic undertone. I'm willing to bet it gets slapped down. Best I can tell you is to submit it, and if they reject it, consider a rewrite.

The tag line here is Horror. I don't believe horror has much to do with death, sex or anything other than scaring the pants off the characters and the reader. Anything else is pure window dressing.

The elements of horror:
Terror of the unknown
Terror of a known element (Vampire, murderer stalking you, etc)
Fear of immentent death in some horrible way (dismemberment or some such)
Note that the horror is the FEAR of those things above, not the actual occrance.

The best horror stories are those where the object of fear is not well defined and only made clear as the story unravels.

Limits? Useless death for the sake of death (snuff). Overly graffic blood and gore (that's more sick than horror)

Otherwise, I don't see any other limits beyond the normal Lit limitations of age and beastiality.

I'm going to share some advice that Laurel gave to me recently concerning the level of violence/gore:

Laurel said:
As far as violence goes, it's kind of tricky. Generally, you can get as gory as you like provided the gore/abuse isn't meant as the object of sexual gratification (i.e. "I knifed the bitch's face and jacked off into her oozing wound", lol). Horror movie style gore and scariness is fine. This is our personal preference for the site - not a statement on what people should or shouldn't write. We strongly believe that authors should write about anything they durn please.

Good luck to you, Jen. ;)

So my idea of the aborted fetus coming back as a grown man to take brutal revenge on his mother would be okay? Or not?

I don't know.

Yeah, I know. VERY dark material. Darker than most of my usual work. Malice of that sort would be a challenge for me, which is why I wanted to go for it.

Is this for Halloween?

As opposed to Mother's Day?

(sounds very twisted Sev ... and sure to draw at least 6 pages of comments and arguements on the PCs if you go through with it)

Thanks for the encouragement. Given the political aspect and the horror, I might well stir up some controversy. But I'm not doing it for political reasons. Just for horror.

That would be a first for me. Never had more than one page of PCs before.

With the subject matter, I suspect that the PCs would degenerate into some rowdy arguements ... but you will also get alot of on topic/related to the story comments. Just make sure you put on a pair of asbestos briefs before you post the story.

Thanks. I'll bear the warning in mind.

What if you mix horror with celebrities? I know I keep bringing it up in odd places, but I was planning on having a couple of celebrities absorbed by tentacle monsters. I'm afraid that they won't get accepted, and I'll have to keep them as my dirty little secret

I'm pretty sure that if you included any celebrities who are front an centre in the action, it would automatically placed in the celeb category with the pre-requisite disclaimer. But if you write it for the Halloween Contest, it will get a larger reading audience.

BTW ... tentacle porn?

Japanese hentai type stuff. I've had Britney Spears and Jennifer Love Hewitt abused so far. I have plans for a dozen or so more celebs over the next ten or so stories. It should be a lot of fun, but after having trouble getting Jennifer passed the last time, I've been reluctant to finish a few stories that I have in the works, afraid they won't get accepted.
