Hoosier Daddy?

Indy-pendant? 500 miles to go? Got you Irish up?
C'mon - Hoosier Daddy? Hoosier Daddy?

Indy - land of bad food - they think Wonder Bread croutons are a gourmet item.

Hoosier Daddy?

Wow.

Bobby Night's yur daddy? - You had to be an abused child. I'd rather have the Bird as my daddy. Don't think he'd hit me with any chairs.

You got silver hair?

Why Indiana kicks ass

I lived in Indianapolis for 3 or 4 years, and loved it. I went to GAGE institute (something something Gifted Education) for two years, a nice little private school with weird owners, one of which I saw on the Maury Povich show for some reason a few years ago. I loved visiting Broad Ripple, and the Jazz Kitchen had the best soul food I ever had in my life.

I still remember one of the jingles for a delivery place: "four-six-five, eleven-eleven.. spaghetti to go!"

Someone told me a while ago they closed the Union Station mall, which it hurt to hear. That was one of the biggest buildings I'd been in as a kid, and the white statues of the railway workers looked like ghosts.

I saw AJ qualify for his last Indy 500, and listened to Bob and Tom every morning. I lived in a string of condominium complexes and was rarely allowed outside their walls. When we moved to Montana, I cried.

I hear a lot has changed since 1991, but I still occasionally want to go back to Indianapolis.. Or at least, the one I remember. Ah, nostalgia.

Didn't know that -

I bought shoes in that mall not long ago - I thought - maybe 5 or 6 years ago. It looked a little quiet but I figured "that's Indy in the evening." Went, had steaks at St. Elmo's. That's where I picked up the crouton bit. All they have there are freaky great steaks and a salad bar. Did Indy (the track) and ther were repaving it. I could not believe the fucking hugeness of it - biggest God damn sporting facility I've ever seen - TV doesn't do it justice in the least. Got to go there and see it. My wife (major Irish Catholic babe) was born there and lived out most of her childhood there.

She's to whom I say, "Hoosier Daddy?" This as I smack her ass with a freshly defrosted steak.

Endlessly, I went to college in IN and still have fond memories of it. Broad Ripple is still quaint and eclectic, at least as eclectic as they can get in Indiana. Unfortunately Union Station has closed...too bad. When I lived there we were referred to the residents as locals or natives...locals usually moved there or else moved away but the native tended to say things like 'Can I tell you the easiest way' when asked for directions.

St. Elmo's just steaks? Howzabout those unbelievable shrimp cocktails with the 5 alarm cocktail sauce?

Lived in Indiana all my life. Got my eyebrow pierced in Broadripple. Go to Indy all the time. Actually thinking about going there Friday.

Cheri, which school did you go to?

Oh girl make me feel all embarrassed...um....well Anderson U....there I said it and don't feel to foolish. Yeah good old Anderson....and I even have fond memories there as well. Not quite enough to give to the alumni fund like they want, but waddya gonna do.
Ever go to the Great Harvest Bread Store? Their scones are amazing, IMHO...

The closest I've ever been to Indiana is watching that movie, "Breaking Away." If you've never seen it, you have to rent it.

"Breaking Away" is on AMC this Friday night (happened to be looking ahead for classic movies and saw this). The conversation that Daniel Stern has about his father enjoying being understanding when he fails is priceless.

So save the rental fees and just send me a check for $3.16, care of Laurel and I can retire.

"Mary Jane's Last Dance"

oh yes Chester dear .. i love that movie Breaking Away .. i almost forgot about it ... lol .. i'll have to see that one again ...

Bad Songs of Indiana

I have always disliked "Last Dance for Mary Jane" although Tom Petty has plenty of decent songs (Breakdown, American Girl). But in the pantheon of bad IN songs, I guess it would still be best. Others of ill repute, "Indiana Wants Me" and "Back Home Again in Indiana." The latter destroyed annually by some combination of Jim Nabors or Florence Henderson.

Thank goodness for John Hiatt.

"Little girl playin' with the moonlight
shine it on me, shine it on me
There's a cloud over my light and it's troubling me

Such a world, such an invitation
Come as you are, come as you are
Subject to change, but we'll try not to leave any scars

Washable ink, if you think it stinks you can cry it away
They don't want to hear your sad story today
Everybody's busy whoever they are
Washable ink, put it in the sink if you've had enough
But if you're on the brink of the usual stuff
Wait 'til it rains and give it away

Little girl, they just want to train you
To keep them amused, to keep them amused
They don't know, you got your match to the end of that fuse"
- John Hiatt, "Washable Ink"

Quit Jamming Me!

John Hiatt's ok i guess, but in my humble opinion, he does not even compare to Tom Petty ... and whenever i hear of Indiana, i always think of Last Dance with Mary Jane .. :)

btw .. i am being blonde again lol ... what does that Hiatt song have to do with Indiana?
_________
Oh baby don't it feel like heaven right now
Don't it feel like something from a dream
Yeah I've never known nothin' quite like this
Don't it feel like tonight might never be again
We know better than to try and pretend

John Hiatt is from Indiana and, IMHO, kicks Tom Petty's ass six ways to Sunday...*g*

The Colts kick ass!

Gators rocks!

One-liners is the greatest!

We may have unleashed Quail on the country,
but we've also given you Evan Byah.

And you haven't been to the track, unless you've
been there the night before the race.

Oh, Evan's a cutie! Wait til he runs for pres. All the women will be voting for him. Quayle is an embarassment!

Give me Jim singing "Back Home Again in Indiana" over Flo ANYDAY!!!!! She makes me gag.

There's a song by Deana Carter about a girl being born in the back seat and "her momma named her Indiana like their license plate." <shaking my head at that one>

Oh yeah, Go Colts!! Go Payton!! ;)

Isn't there also a really cool movie called "Hoosiers" with Dennis Hopper?

yea i guess cause Tom Petty is a Florida lad .. maybe John Hiatt sings it better for Indiana .. :)

"Hoosiers" is based on the true story of Milan High, a little bitty school that won the Indiana State Basketball Championship, back when it was all single class (all schools competed for one trophy, regardless of size). Three or four years ago, the state went to class sports ruining a good chunk of tradition. People are still fairly upset and it is a major argument in our Governor's race this fall. Heck with education and security, give me one hell of basketball tournament. Bread and circuses indeed!

And John Hiatt (the pride of Broad Ripple) writes great songs, even if he can't sing them. Figure for the next 20 years that his stuff is going to be covered over and over. Right now, Eric Clapton and B.B. King are warbling their way through "Riding with The King" on the radio. There will be more . . .

"Though you're sharper than me, it's too late to turn around" - My Edge of the Razor, John Hiatt not Occam

Hiatt Rules -

"I dreamed I did a good job
And got well paid
Blew it all at the penny arcade

A hundred dollars on a kewpie doll
I guess no white chick is gonna make me crawl

On a TWA to the Promised Land
Every woman, child and man
Gets a Cadillac and a diamond ring

Don't you know we're riding with the King"

JH is a King, among song writers - excellent performer (great band of late) - yeah, vocals aren't his forte' and he's a bit wooden (although very well schooled) as an interviewer on Session's. Met him, Richard Thompson and Junior Brown - renting Junior a Fender Twin for a gig at the Fredrick, (MD) county fair. Three pretty hip dudes.

Hurts so Good

OMG ... all this talk bout musicians from Indiana .. and i almost forgot one of my faves .. Big Daddy ... John Cougar Mellencamp .. i guess i am just more a rock chick than blues .. lol .. but i do love blues too ... :)

hey isn't David Letterman also from Indiana?

Yep, him and Jane Pauley both went to Ball State. Dr. Nancy Snyderman (GMA) is also from Indiana. Some other singers I can think of Sandy Patti (gospel), Janie Frickie (70 & 80's country), and I think that Lisa Germano is also from here.

Is this in Anderson? Or maybe in Indy? I'm taking tomorrow off and going to Indy for the day. If I'm near it, I'd like to stop and check it out.

There are four different locations around Indy. Check the phone book for the one nearest you!
