Home Workout

This might sound a little off-the-wall, but go talk to your local military recruiter. Let them know what it is you want, and that you aren't wanting to join.

When you think about it, military personel have to maintain a near perfect physical conditioning routine, thusly have been trained in this. Pick their brains. Good publicity for them when you tell others how helpful they were.

Another source of info is date a physical therapist or an occupational therapist. They also have good knowledge you might be able to tap.

Third source is to check your local library. Depending on how motivated you are, you can read about then do the various calisthenics described therein.

weightloss is the result of a caloric deficit. if you consume less than you burn (in kcals) you'll lose weight. the key is to lose FAT above all else. there aren't any gimmicks or quick approaches to it... it's a lifestyle change pure and simple.

i lost 150 pounds many years ago and continue to learn about health and fitness issues every day. in my opinion, the best text i've found for general information about your body is "you: the owner's manual" by drs. mehmet oz and michael roizen. i've seen and read all sorts of things over the years but this book presents solid science in simple terms... it gives the best overview of how your body works and it does so without any agenda other than good health.

my favorite resources on the 'net have been:
ExRx
and john berardi's site (which has some useful articles among the "for sale" stuff)
and i used fitday.com religiously to track my caloric intake.

the bottom line, in simple terms, is to find something you enjoy doing and do it regularly. if you increase your activity and monitor your caloric intake you'll lose weight and be healthier.

Jogging/jump rope/ect... really is the best weight loss exercises. You don't need all the fancy equipment. The only workout 'equipment I have is a balance ball and a couple sets of dumbells - all in all costs about $30-50 probably.

Before I joined my gym, I used work out video's a lot. Leslie Sansone's Walk away the pounds series is a good one, and Denise Austin's are usually pretty good if you can take her perkiness.

Try Sex

60 minutes of foreplay followed by 10 minutes of average paced screwing is worth burning about 150 calories.

Look here for more info on burning calories with different activities.

For the first month do not change your diet, just get out and speed walk/jog. The first week take it easy on your body, don't push yourself to far. The second week increase your distance along with the third week. The fourth week keep the same momentum. The first 2 weeks are the hardest, after that you will feel weird if you don't work out. Then after the first month, watch what you eat, no sodas drink allot of water, you wont see a huge difference on the scale, but you will feel the difference.

I live in an upstairs apartment and i can't do a lot of the noisy stuff (jumping rope and so on) but i do try to work out everyday. I alternate pilates, yoga and bellydancing. You can go on-line and find yoga postures ranging from beginner to advanced, and they don't cost anything, and you can always rent (or buy) exersize videos really cheaply. I got my first set of bellydancing videos for 20 bucks total on e-bay. I started years ago and it really becomes addictive, and makes you feel fantastic, not to mention you can break out with some of that on the dance floor if you're into that

Stairs!

Run up them, then walk down, repeat.
over and over.
I learned this from my ex's old roomate. That was her main exercise and she had a tight, sexy little body.

Anyone got any ideas for a good, cardiovascular, weight loss home workout? I can't afford any gym equipment and I don't go to a gym. I've been doing sit-ups every day but I understand that is more to tone the muscle rather than burn fat off, so I don't know how good it is for weight loss. Any ideas, or anything that's worked for you? Thanks in advance. :)

First of all, congrats EJFAN! That is an incredible weight loss accomplishment.

Seamus123 you are correct about sittups being more about toning than cardio. The best, easiest, cheapest form of cardio is walking. You have to walk at a brisk pace though and for at least 20 minutes/3 times a week to do any good.

A couple of years ago a friend and I got together every morning during the summer months. We talked as we walked. Took off the pounds while also trying the Atkins diet. It worked and was very enjoyable. I had more energy than ever before.

I am the worlds worst at exercising though. I have all the home equipment and hubby is qualified as a personal trainer with all his years of research, personal experience at the gym and years of working out faithfully. I just never find the time (at least that is my excuse this week).

I have recently lost weight and want to keep it off. I have managed to now for about a year. The weight loss has been the best thing I have ever done but I need the cardio too just for overall better health.

I plan to use my Gazelle indoors until it warms up and then start my walking outside again. It is better to go with a friend, but with my schedule, I will be better off going by myself and sticking with it. Hubby will walk too but he is a lot taller and I find I am jogging to keep up. Maybe that is his strategy to make me work at it harder. :)

Thanks for all your advice :) now I've gotta come up with some sort of plan.. :D

I am not BIG (in both respects..ha!) but as I age I do have to watch my weight. Also, I need exercise (especially in the winter when I am sitting more). My philosophy is simple... Just keep moving around. Vacuum, mop, walk around the house every so often, just move. Maybe through in some things like pushups, situps, jump rope. Maybe walk the dog.

But while you do this, adjust the diet. I think (in my case) the biggest culprit is eating those damn snacks. Try to refrain from those tempting chips and cookies and BEER (ughhh). Actually beer isn't fatening (as compared to other things) but it tends to make you want to nibble. But for me I would rather nibble on a nice set of breasts... burns the calories...

TOP 25 FITNESS TIPS

Exercise. If exercise were a pill, it would be the most widely prescribed medicine in the world.

Eat a balanced diet, lower in fat, lower in sugar and higher in fiber.

Diets don't work. Exercise is the bottom line behavior for weight management.

Throw away your scales. Measuring your body fat is a better indicator of health than your weight.

When trying to lose fat, aim for a maximum of 2 pounds a week.

If spot reducing worked, people who chew gum would have skinny faces.

Crash dieting, over exercising and fasting will slow down your metabolism.

People don't stop exercising because they grow old, they grow old because they stop exercising.

It's easy to lose weight. The challenge is to keep it off. Exercise works.

Don't worry so much about your heart rate when you exercise. Use common sense and pace yourself so you can talk.

When you exercise, remind yourself, "I'm building fat-burning enzymes."

If you get out of breath when you exercise, you're going too fast.

One of the best ways to reduce stress is to exercise.

The older you are, the more important it is that you exercise. Exercise makes bones denser. Exercise helps maintain mobility.

Labels don't lie, but liars write labels.

Statistics are like bikinis. They only reveal half the truth.

Upper-body weight training will help women maintain lean body mass.

More muscle equals less workout time.

Don't say, "I don't eat red meat." Say, "I don't eat greasy meats."

There's no such thing as cellulite. The word was dreamed up by people with products to market to describe skin with texture that shows underlying fat on some women more than others.

The best aerobic exercise is the one you'll do every day.

The best time to exercise is when you will do it.

If you don't seem to be getting more fit, you may be exercising too hard.

If you exercise more than 45 minutes 5 days a week, you aren't doing it for fitness sake.

Beware of medically monitored diet programs. If you need a doctor, there must be something wrong.

as someone who's done a lot of research on the subject: the only true way to lose fat weight and keep it off requires the holy trinity of - resistence training, cardio training, and a properly balanced diet.

muscle burns calories. fat does not.
you don't build any muscle doing cardio.
cardio can burn fat off of you, directly...but weight training cannot.
if you eat too much, no amount of cardio and weights will help.

so, you lift weights to add some muscle...not a gross amount, just 'some'

you do cardio to try to burn off the stored fat, and to increase aerobic levels which in turn help raise your metabolism.

you eat properly, neither starving yourself, nor over-eating. Lots of lean protein, veggies, moderate on healthy fats, and low on starchy carbs like breads, pastas, potatoes, and avoid sugar in general.

losing 1.5-2lbs a week is all you can hope for. any more than that, and you're losing muscle mass, which lowers your caloric needs, which means you have to eat less to keep losing weight. Screw that!

initial weight loss is only quick because its mostly water weight and old food finally being purged once you start eating all those veggies (i.e. fiber)

pushups, a pullup bar, lunges and squats (even with bodyweight or holding a couple of milk jugs filled with water) will be a good place to start without any gym type equipment.

Join the Y or a cheap gym with free weights. stay off the machines.

Walking fast, running, biking, walking up and down the stairs, skating, or jogging as you prefer are all good cardio workouts. It just depends on what you can do day after day for 3-4 times a week. You need to work up to at least 30 minutes.

In addition sit ups and any spot exercises can help every other day to work on either overall body fitness or trouble spots. For abdominals, sit ups aren't that great, crunches and reverse sit ups work better. Google those.

Drink at least as much water as anything else you drink. Cut back on calories if you are trying to lose and not trying to bulk muscles up.

Fury :rose:

I lost 80lbs doing exercise videos and step aerobics. Doing step doesn't call for anymore room than the step and your body are in. After six weeks of exercise they say it's locked into your brain. Go for it! Yup, I read Covert Bailey too. I also got 30 pounds left to lose... the force is with me! :nana:

Walk every day for 30 minutes :)

I am interested in what everyone has to say on this matter. Someone mentioned using a gazelle...i bought one a few weeks ago, and i am freaking addicted, i love that thing, especially since its cold out, and i can't spend time doing stuff outside...and for someone that hates excersize equipment (where every minute seems to take 10) the time just flies by...i
