Vanessa expelled a quiet sigh of relief once her parents ceased their barrage of hugs and kisses to let her take her bags upstairs. It’d been several months since she’d had time off from work to travel back to her family’s home, so she understood their enthusiasm. She was happy to be back in her hometown for the holidays this year, but she needed a few minutes of downtime. Setting her handbag down on the bed in her childhood room, Vanessa enjoyed a moment of nostalgia. Her room, for the most part, looked the same as it had when she’d left it at the age of 21. She smirked when she noticed that the Johnny Depp poster she’d gotten as a gift when she was 16 was still there above her bed; the things he’d seen her do late at night when everyone else was asleep…

Now she was 28, with a lucrative job across the country and her own apartment. A lot had changed over the years and most for the better. The one thing that she did regret was falling out of touch with her younger brother, but she knew he’d be coming to visit too. They’d probably pick up right where they left off as they always did. As mom checked on the dish in the oven and dad messed with a tangled string of lights for the tree in the living room, Vanessa unpacked a couple things from her suitcase so they wouldn’t wrinkle. She briefly considered changing her clothes (skinny sweatpants and a fitted Henley top) but when she heard a familiar commotion downstairs, she abandoned the idea. Her brother had arrived and she was eager to see him. Swinging her bedroom door open, Vanessa made haste downstairs.

Vanessa halted just before reaching the bottom landing, giving Jesse a chance to pull his luggage out of her way. She’d been so eager to see him after a full year of being apart that she hadn’t even seen his bag on the last step; she definitely would’ve tripped and probably twisted her ankle had he not stopped her in her tracks. That wouldn’t have been any way to start off Christmas vacation. Though having Jesse wait on her hand and foot for accidentally causing her injury wouldn’t have been too bad…

The older sibling‘s smile grew until her cheeks ached when Jesse stepped forward and grabbed the strap of his duffel to clear her path. Eagerly bouncing on her bare heels, Vanessa’s lips parted in a breezy laugh. “I’m really good. I’ve just missed my little brother all this time!” She slipped her arms around his neck, comfortably leaning into him when his arms circled around her back.

He seemed different since the last time they’d seen one another. Older? It was silly to consider. Of course, he seemed older. A year had passed. A birthday. Handsome, perhaps was the better adjective. She’d forgotten how much he’d matured since she’d moved away from home; he wasn’t the awkward boy who used to shadow her throughout the house with food caught in his braces and hadn’t been for a while now. She could feel the press of his toned muscles as they embraced and she wondered if he’d been working out. Drawing back from their warm hug, Vanessa playfully squeezed her brother’s bicep.

“Though… I guess you’re not so little anymore huh?”

Vanessa rolled her eyes a little when Jesse boasted over his height advantage. He had surpassed her in recent years, but it wasn’t as if he’d earned the achievement by his own merit. He’d just been lucky. That was okay by her, since she preferred to be around taller guys anyhow. She smirked and swatted Jesse’s chest when he rubbed it in by lifting to his toes. “I’d be just as tall when I put my heels on. Just remember that.” Heels over 3 inches tall were her default; they were actually comfortable to her and had the added bonus of making her naturally long legs look amazing.

She smiled warmly and linked her arm with her brother’s as their parents left them to their own devices. “Oh c’mon Jesse. You just got here. Come upstairs and get comfortable. Spend some time with me.” It was more of a command than a request, punctuated by the tug of her arm around his. “We’ll have plenty of time to catch the game and walk the dog. Let me be selfish for a minute.”

“Oldest… don’t forget smartest, prettiest, most talented…” Vanessa shrugged as if those accolades meant nothing, but her smug grin said otherwise. She never shied away from compliments, even if she was paying them to herself. Vanity had probably always been one of her biggest flaws. Jesse never complained about it though. He was always sweet even when she didn’t deserve it. “See? I’m saving us from the weather and getting colds and slippery ice. You’re welcome.” She didn’t let her brother set both feet on the top landing before she was tugging him toward her bedroom.

When they entered through the doorway, she released her sibling’s arm and paced to her queen-sized bed. She tilted her head when he inquired about her boyfriend, looking at him with slight confusion written on her face. It wasn’t until she followed his gaze to the poster above her bed that she realized he was teasing. She turned to Jesse and swatted his arm, bubbling with laughter. “Oh shut up. I don’t have a boyfriend. Not really. So, if Johnny decides he’s ready to settle down with me… I’m still open to it.” She was seeing someone at home, but she didn’t think it was headed anywhere serious.

“There is a guy, I guess. But we’re not really together—I don’t know.” She shook her head and let the topic rest there. It wasn’t exactly worth talking about in her estimation.

“Oh, it’s fine.” Vanessa pulled Jesse’s hand and invited him to join her on the edge of the bed. “I’m a pharmaceutical sales rep. Basically I get paid to flirt with hot doctors all day. I travel to conventions and stay in ritzy hotels and I have a company car and everything.” She grinned wide and laced her fingers with Jesse’s, shrugging her shoulders. “You can start unpacking for me if you want—yeah—and you can tell me about what’s new with you?”

“I did? Well, it wouldn’t be modest if I bragged about how modest I was, would it? But yeah, I am that too.” Vanessa quipped, catching her brother’s little dig. Her ears were exceptionally keen; he must’ve forgotten. She shrugged her shoulders and leaned back against her bed, using her elbows to prop herself up as Jesse sorted through the contents of her luggage.

“Sure, there’s more to my job than being a flirt, but it sure as hell doesn’t hurt. Doctors love to slam doors in your face once they see you coming with your sample boxes and brochures. But when I put a little red lipstick on and a tight skirt with tall pumps, it’s amazing how quickly attitudes change. It’s not fair, but that’s how you play the game.”

Vanessa smirked when Jesse teased about her bossing him around. Obviously, she couldn’t refute that claim right then. He was unpacking her suitcase at her behest after all. In her defense, she hadn’t applied any force, nor would there be repercussions if he didn’t comply. Therefore, she wasn’t entirely to blame for her power trips. “I’m surprisingly independent, Jesse,” she exhaled, shifting on her bed and rising to her feet when he stopped doing the work for her. She swept her dark hair over her shoulder then resumed the task, tossing her delicate panties and bras into a pile on the edge of the bed. “Almost done with college… wow. I can’t believe it.”

She grinned when she heard him say that he was enjoying the time he had. No doubt that had something to do with promiscuous girls on campus. “Mmhm. I’d love it if you came to visit me.”

The offer was sincere. It would probably be fun to have Jesse stay with her for a couple of weeks. They could spend the time rebuilding their bond and she would definitely make him earn his keep by attending to all of the chores she’d neglected.

“Oh you mean like how I taught you to kiss?” She teased, using her fingertips as a makeshift slingshot to playfully launch a sheer, neon pink thong at his face. “I hope you’ve been putting those lessons to good use.”

“Good,” Vanessa grinned when Jesse gave her a favorable report on his kissing prowess. She supposed that it wasn’t typical to learn kissing from one’s own flesh and blood, but it didn’t bother her any. No one knew about it back then and no one needed to know about it now. “I wasn’t going to let my brother develop a reputation as a bad kisser. Absolutely not.”

She nudged her empty suitcase closed once the neon thong left her grasp and paced back toward the bed to join her brother. Smirking as he inquired about her love life, she climbed up onto the edge of the mattress. “A nurse actually,” Vanessa exhaled, flipping her long hair over her shoulder. She hated bringing guys home—there was always too much pressure from her parents to commit. If that didn’t scare the guy off, it made her lose interest in the development of the relationship. She figured it was just best to live out her personal life as far from her family as possible to prevent complications.

“We met on the job back home. He won’t be around for Christmas anyway. So no chance of you guys meeting him this year. Oh well.”

She peeked over at Jesse when his shirt slid up to expose his abs. Her gaze drifted to the defined planes of muscle above his belly button and she smirked, staring rather shamelessly. “Hmm, I dunno. Should I?” Vanessa shrugged a shoulder, leaning over and brushing her fingertips over her brother’s flat stomach. “You look like you’re more than capable.”
