For anyone with children ~ Please forward this on. This is the real
thing.
No tricks!!!!!!

I have been alerted by one of our EMT's for our volunteer fire
department that they have received emails from emergency responder
organizations to be on the lookout for a new form of Crystalized Meth
that is targeted at children and to be aware of this new form if called
to an emergency involving a child that may have symptoms of drug
induction or overdose. They are calling this new form of meth
"Strawberry Quick" and it looks like the "Pop Rocks" candy that sizzle
in your mouth. In its current form, it is dark pink in color and has a
strawberry scent to it. Please advise your children and their friends
and other students not to accept candy from strangers as this is
obviously an attempt to seduce children into drug use.
They also need to be cautious in accepting candy from even friends that
may have received it from someone else, thinking it is just candy. I
don't want this email to scare anyone, but as a parent, coach,
volunteer
firefighter and friend, I thought it would be best to share this with
you, so you can once again talk to your children about the effects of
drugs and how easy it could be to take drugs without knowing it, until
it is too late. I worry, just as each of you do about kids and drugs
and all the problems our kids today are faced with. So please talk
with
your children about this newest Threat to get children addicted to
drugs!

Oh, and I already ran a google search and a snopes search on this, this seems legit to me.

Three things about this thread .

1. I adore people whom use Snopes.com before they set off urban legends .

2. Thank you for the information Grace.

3. I thought from the Thread title you were alerting us that SwanSong was back , I feel both humiliated yet in same total relief . Now what's that remind you of ........

I always research that kind of thing before I pass it on. Frankly when nothing showed up on snopes, I went ahead and googled it to be doubly sure. I found a lot of information to back up what I got from my sister in law (who never double checks snopes.com  )

"DEA Says Flavored Meth Spreading
March 28, 2007

Drug dealers are marketing flavored varieties of methamphetamine in at least eight states, USA Today reported March 26.

Meth mixed with strawberry, chocolate, cola and other flavors has appeared in California, Nevada, Washington, Idaho, Texas, New Mexico, Missouri, and Minnesota, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). "Drug traffickers are trying to lure in new customers, no matter what their age, by making the meth seem less dangerous," said DEA spokesman Steve Robertson.

Experts say that it's not unusual for meth dealers to color or name their product to increase brand visibility. One version of flavored meth has been dubbed "Strawberry Quick," the Nevada Department of Public Safety noted.

"Strawberry Quick is popular among new users who snort it because the flavoring can cut down on the taste. Teenagers who have been taught meth is bad may see this flavored version as less harmful. 'Strawberry Quick' is designed for the younger crowd," the Nevada agency warned recently.

Deputy U.S. drug czar Scott Burns sees flavored meth as a sign that dealers are having a harder time selling the drug; use of first-time meth users fell in 2005. "The traffickers know the word is out about what a horrible drug this is," Burns said. "They are having a tough time selling this product, especially to young people. What do people in marketing do when they have a tough time selling a product? They have to come up with some sort of gimmick." "

Living in Minnesota, and having a 9 and 10 year old, I just had a good talk with 'em. My daughter more understands the gravity of this, having just finished the school's DARE program. Thanks for the heads up.

I have a friend with a child, and meth is already a HUGE problem out here....I'll let them know. Thanks, graceanne.

Flavoured? Now that's a low blow, even for a drug lord.

MN has a massive and growing meth problem, it's really sad.

I remember being cautioned not to take stickers you have to lick, at one point they were lacing 'em with LSD. The trick isn't new, it's just as disgusting as ever.

SPEW!!

Seriously though, thanks for the info Gracie. We have a serious meth problem in the South as well. Scary stuff

Meth is a growing problem just about everywhere, cause the ingredients to make meth are available at any drug store. Oregon's made it so that you have to have a script for one of the main ingredients (Sudafed), and if you're caught on your way into Oregon with a ton of Sudafed you can get arrested. *shrugs* They say it's helping. I suspect that Washington's meth problem just got worse, though.

How scary! A talk is in order for my 5 year old and my 7 year old.... Thank you so much for forwarding this on. Hopefully it will stay out of MA!

The worst drug issue in Dallas right now is "cheese"- heroin mixed with Tylenol PM... it's supposed to be a great high; the only problem is that the first hit tends to be the one that kills you.

Sigh.
This flavored meth has been around for a while. But, it's now making its way through the country. Missouri use to be known as one of the meth lab centers of the country. And, Independence, MO, a suburb of Kansas City was one of the worst. I remember home explosions and resulting fires that were later found out to be a meth lab gone bad.

But, because of good police work, that has changed a lot. They say most of the labs have been trying to go mobile, using a van as their lab base, which I wouldn't think is easy. And, I've heard Mexico is where a lot of them have gone. That makes sense, because we can't stop anything or anybody from coming from that country into ours. They've been sending us pot for decades.

And, as Netzach says, I remember the "old" days, when LSD was put on Warner Brothers and Disney character stickers...Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Dumbo, etc. It was called blotter acid. LSD is manufactured as a liquid, and so potent, it takes only a small drop to get you high.

And, because it's a liquid, stickers and colored pieces of paper were often used, because it was a good way to get it past the police. Back then, nobody thought it could happen that someone would stoop low enough to put a drug on something that might attract kids. The thought behind it wasn't to attract kids, but just to find a way to get it delivered, unnoticed.

The method was very affective. Blotter came in pretty colors, and in those cartoon character squares. You'd just lick the sticker, or suck on the colored paper to get high. And, if you handled it too much, and then rubbed your eye, you could get a dose just from that. Another version of LSD called windowpane, was a small flat clear square wafer, about 1/4-inch in diameter. That could be cut up and get four people high.

This new stuff is being marketed as an alternative for those who don't like the taste of the drug, so it is possible to get more customers that way. I can see that making it much more attractive to people who before might not be attracted because of the taste. Personally, I never much liked the taste of cigarettes or most alcohol, mainly because I was repelled by the taste. I'm glad that I was like that, because to this day, I don't smoke, and I drink very little.

I don't know if this new stuff was made to attract kids as much as it was made to be an alternative for those potential customers who are like me. But, because it looks and tastes like candy, I can see kids trying it before they know what they are getting into and becoming hooked, or even dying.

Of course, people who make this stuff don't care if kids are attracted to it and get hooked at an early age. It's a new demographic they didn't think of, but a new customer is always welcome and a sale is a sale.

I remember back in the old days, there would be bad drugs going around. People who didn't know how to make pure drugs, would still make them. Only after people died from these drugs, did the word of mouth get around. Just as today, back then an easy buck was all some people were after. These people don't expect to get caught, so any stranger they hurt is an acceptable risk.

Now, this cheese stuff, I've never heard of. And, I don't think it will be long before it will also be going through the country. Something new to try is always enticing to people out looking for a good time. It's only a matter of time.

On a good side note, I've read where testers at Harvard and the National Institute of Mental Health are actually testing Ecstasy, ketamine (special K) and psilocybin (mushrooms) in the treatment of mental illness, panic disorders and OCD. Ketamine is found to help with anti-depression, psilocybin helps with OCD and they are finding that Ecstasy might help alleviate anxiety disorders.

So, I guess these drugs do have a good side. Maybe all things are good, in small doses?

A lot of people use drugs to self-medicate their very real disorders. Sometimes they prefer the side effects of whatever drug over whatever medication that's actually prescribed.

I'm glad that they're testing these drugs to see how they help. My sister was recently put on lithium for being bipolar. She's so much improved, but she doesn't like the lithium. She prefers the lithium over how she was feeling before, but if they had something that works as well she'd take it.
