Plane crash in SFO!

A plane is burning on the runway at San Francisco International Airport while emergency personnel attempt to evacuate survivors. According to Heavy.com, the plane is a Boeing 777 Asiana flight that was coming in from Seoul, South Korea.

Witnesses are saying that the plane’s tail touched the runway as it attempted to land.

The pilot hit the tail on the seawall at the end of the runway. That cause the empanage to break off, and surprise, it crashed. It did not turn over and it caught fire after it had been evacuated.

Oh and there was a fireworks accident in the Simi Valley!

Plane on the 405 Freeway Long Beach

And this:
A small plane crash landed Saturday afternoon near the 405 Freeway and Cherry Avenue in Long Beach.

Few details were immediately available, but the California Highway Patrol said there did not appear to be any injuries.

News over here is that two have died. RIP

I've seen the same, two fatalities in the SFO crash. That's so sad, but at the same time kind of amazing there weren't more. This CNN link reports one death in the Canadian train crash. It was an unmanned train that rolled seven miles (!!), doing damage in the process. Again, probably lucky more weren't killed. (And how weird that life imitates art, since something like this was the plot of "Unstoppable.)

A unmanned train (also in Canada) is the theme of the movie "Runaway Train" although the presumed ending crash is not shown.

You may not like it but it happens to be the truth:

...we see that the claims by the opponents of the pipeline that they are trying to “protect the environment” are simply not true. If they were really concerned about the environment, they’d want the Keystone XL pipeline expansion. It is much more dangerous to the environment to move the Alberta heavy crude by railroad tank car than by pipeline … and the tragedy in Canada is an excellent example of why...

PS—In any case, if the pipeline is blocked, the Alberta heavy crude will still be burned, either shipped to China, or shipped to the US and Buffett will be even richer, or burned in Canada, but it will be burned. That’s the crazy part—the opposition to the pipeline, even if successful, will achieve nothing … welcome to the crazy world of modern environmental NGOs and their followers …

The Latest--50 might be dead

From here:
The Musi-Cafe, a popular live music hangout in the town of Lac-Megantic, was hit by blasts "like an atom bomb" after an oil tanker train derailed on a bend on the nearby railtrack in the small hours of Saturday morning. The train, which had been parked overnight at the top of a nearby hill, came barrelling into the lakeside town at speed after its brakes apparently failed, sparking at least six massive explosions as it derailed.

...While only three fatalities had been confirmed as of Sunday morning, officials said that up to 80 people were still believed to be missing in the crash zone. One firefighter, who asked to remain anonymous, said that at least 50 of them were thought to have been in the Musi-Cafe, which was just ten yards from the crash scene and had been consumed by the flames.
“There is nothing left,” he said.
:(

Wow. That's just . . . indescribable. You can't imagine what something like that is like unless you've actually experienced it. Must have seemed like the end of the world for that little town. In a way, I guess it was.

:rose:

So sorry for all those affected.

I hope all Canadian AHers are OK. Thinking of you, Tio.
